Nhill Trailer Exchange - female facilities upgrade

We’re upgrading existing amenities to include safe and accessible female toilets at the busy heavy vehicle rest stop in Western Victoria.

Project status:

Underway

An expansion of the existing facilities block at Nhill Trailer Exchange will allow for two dedicated female toilets to be constructed, and ensure adequate services are available for all heavy vehicle drivers travelling on the Western Highway. The current male and unisex accessible facilities will remain unchanged.

Works are planned to start in May 2026, and will take up to eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Construction impacts

We understand construction works can be disruptive, and we thank you for your patience during this project.

Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of weekend works.

Existing facilities may be closed for short times during construction while crews work to upgrade the toilet block. Temporary male and female toilets will be available if closures are required.

There will be no impacts to traffic on the Western Highway as we deliver works onsite at the Nhill Trailer Exchange.

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

Background

The Western Highway is the primary interstate route between Melbourne and Adelaide. In the Nhill region, the highway accommodates more than 1,500 trucks each day.

The Nhill Trailer Exchange was established to allow truck drivers to efficiently exchange trailers and return to their home city, optimising logistics and promoting economic efficiency.

The road freight industry is undergoing significant change, with women now making up around 25 per cent of the workforce.

Investing in dedicated female toilets provides for greater diversity within the workforce and encouraging more women to take on opportunities in truck driving.

The completion of this project will provide safer and equitable facilities for everyone.

Project funding

The $530,000 project is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
