Murchison-Violet Town Road - Road Safety Improvements

We’re upgrading and widening the shoulder width on the Murchison-Violet Town Road from Goulburn Valley Freeway (Main Goulburn Channel) to Violet Town as part of the Australian Government and Victorian Government Road Safety Program

Project status:

Underway

We’re upgrading and widening the shoulder width along the Murchison-Violet Town from Goulburn Valley Freeway (Main Goulburn Channel) to Violet Town.

This upgrade will make the road safer for all road users.

Works include

  • widening the road by constructing new sealed shoulders
  • installing audio tractile line marking in both directions of the Murchison-Violet Town Road,
  • minimal removal of vegetation to improve visibility,
  • minor upgrades to the existing barriers and other associated works to enhance road safety.

These upgrades will improve safety for all road users, reducing the risk of hazards and widening the seal of the road.

Delivery

  • Our crews will be on site from 7am to 6pm weekdays. No works are planned for Sundays or public holidays.
  • Works are expected to start in February 2026 and complete in mid 2027, weather permitting.
  • Works will be staged and completed in sections to minimise disruption to road users.
  • Crews will be starting works between the Goulburn Valley Highway and Miepol. Then moving onto sections between Miepol and Violet Town in later 2026.
  • During construction, lane closures with barriers down the centreline dividing the traffic and reduced speeds will be in place.
  • Please observe changed traffic conditions, follow onsite signage and allow extra time.

Murchison-Violet Town Road is a detour route for both the Hume Freeway and Goulburn Valley Highway. In the event of an emergency road closure, works will be paused to accommodate the increased flow of traffic.
