Mount Alexander Road Intersection Upgrades
Planning is underway for a potential upgrade to two major intersections in Essendon, to improve safety, traffic flow and network efficiency.
Planned
- Mount Alexander Road and Napier, Fletcher and Russell streets
- Mount Alexander Road and Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads.
Project background
Approximately 63,000 vehicles travel through the two Mount Alexander Road intersections each day and the intersections facilitate important connections to public transport stops and local nearby areas.
The intersections form part of the Mt Alexander Road corridor which links to the Tullamarine Freeway to the north and CityLink/Flemington Road to the south.
The Mount Alexander Road and Napier, Fletcher and Russell streets intersection also provides for movements to the nearby Essendon Train Station and surrounding precinct.
The Mount Alexander Road and Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads intersection also provides a key connection to the Niddrie-Keilor Road Activity Centre.
Both intersections are used by a large number of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
Benefits
Planning is exploring potential options to:
- improve road safety
- reduce congestion and improve travel times
- provide better connections to public transport
- make it easier and safer to walk and cycle in the area
Next steps
Planning works is expected to be complete in 2025.
