Mount Alexander Road intersection upgrades
We’re improving safety at two major intersections in Essendon.
Planned
We’re making our roads safer and easier for people to get around with upgrades to two major intersections in Essendon:
- Mt Alexander Road at Napier, Fletcher, and Russell streets
- Mt Alexander, Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads
Big Build Roads has completed its planning work for upgrades at the intersections. Planning work included traffic modelling, social studies and environmental investigations. Following this planning work, we will improve safety at these intersections.
Mt Alexander Road at Napier, Fletcher, and Russell streets intersection
We will deliver safety upgrades at the intersection of Mt Alexander Road and Napier, Fletcher, and Russell streets. This includes safer pedestrian crossings and clearer line marking to make the intersection easier to navigate.
We will provide further information on these upgrades throughout 2026.
Mt Alexander, Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads intersection
We’re upgrading the intersection at Mt Alexander, Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads to make it safer and more accessible for everyone as we get ready to welcome the new G Class trams.
These works will include:
- Fully signalising the tram movements at the intersection to improve efficiency and safety.
- Constructing a new dedicated right turn lane from Bulla Road into Keilor Road. The existing right turn lane will be converted into a dedicated right turn lane into Lincoln Road.
- Removing Stop 46 on Mt Alexander Road at Lincoln Road to make tram services more efficient and reliable.
Other works include providing safe crossing points for people to access Stop 47 on Keilor Road, installing tactile ground surface indicators and landscaping at the centre of the intersection.

Project background
Approximately 63,000 vehicles travel through the two Mount Alexander Road intersections each day and the intersections facilitate important connections to public transport stops and local nearby areas.
The intersections form part of the Mt Alexander Road corridor which links to the Tullamarine Freeway to the north and CityLink/Flemington Road to the south.
The Mount Alexander Road and Napier, Fletcher and Russell streets intersection also provides for movements to the nearby Essendon Train Station and surrounding precinct.
The Mount Alexander Road and Bulla, Keilor, and Lincoln roads intersection also provides a key connection to the Niddrie-Keilor Road Activity Centre.
