Moe-Glengarry Road, Newborough to Glengarry safety improvements
We’re improving Moe-Glengarry Road between Newborough and Glengarry to provide a safer and more reliable journey for road users.
Underway
Update – March 2026
Works started in January 2026 and are expected to be completed by mid-2026, weather permitting.
Crews will be working Monday to Saturday.
Traffic impacts
We understand roadworks can be disruptive and have made every effort to minimise the impact to road users.
Lane closures will be in place at times with traffic management and a 40km/h speed limit to help road users travel safely through the area.
Please look out for changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
We will provide advance notice on any further traffic changes as the project progresses.
Thank you for your patience as we deliver this important safety project.
Details
The safety improvements include:
- shoulder sealing
- sealing side road bell mouths (the area where side roads join the main road) and vehicle pull-over areas
- installing new safety barriers
- line marking and signage improvements
- a safer 60km/h speed limit on Narracan Drive and John Field Drive in Moe-Newborough
- a more consistent 80km/h speed between Newborough and Murrays Road in Yallourn North.
Benefits
These works will improve safety by:
- reducing the likelihood and severity of run-off-road crashes
- helping drivers stay in control if their vehicle leaves the road
- improving traction by reducing dirt and gravel on the road, and
- reducing the risk of crashes by lowering speeds.
Overview
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments through the Road Safety Program to improve safety and efficiency along Moe-Glengarry Road.
Moe-Glengarry Road runs from Moe in the west to Glengarry in the east, passing through Newborough, Yallourn North and Tyers.
The road provides a key connection to one of Victoria’s essential services, the Yallourn Power Station and Open Cut Mine. The road also offers an alternative route to the Princes Freeway for communities in the state’s east.
Between 2018 and 2023, there were 50 crashes along this section of road, resulting in 24 serious injuries and four tragic fatalities.
These critical works will improve safety for local communities, visitors and industries.
Infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps reduce the severity of crashes should a crash occur.
