Midland Highway-Central Avenue roundabout
Underway
Update - December 2024
Southern access to the Midland Highway from Central Avenue will be reinstated from mid-December following the completion of stage one of the roundabout.
Construction will pause from Friday 20 December 2024 until Monday 6 January 2025 during the end of year holiday period.
During this time the intersection of Midland Highway and Central Avenue will be open to traffic. Temporary reduced speed limits and traffic management signs will be in place to guide road users through the intersection while works are paused.
Stage 2 of the roundabout construction will start in early January 2025.
Stage Two
Stage Two of this project involves constructing the northern half of the roundabout.
To build this section safely and efficiently we will close northern access to the Midland Highway from Central Avenue from early January for approximately 10 weeks.
During this time road users can access the Midland Highway via New Dookie Road and Doyles Road. Further details can be found on the detour map below:

Please note that local roads will remain open to local traffic during this period.
Crews will be onsite Monday to Friday, with weekend works required at times. During construction temporary reduced speed limits, lane closures and 'stop and slow’ traffic arrangements will be in place at the intersection.
Stage One - Complete
Stage One involved constructing the southern half of the roundabout. Works started in October 2024 and are now complete.

Overview
Construction on the roundabout began in early October 2024 and is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete, weather permitting.
Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersections because they slow traffic to safe speeds and direct traffic flow in the one direction.
With increasing volumes of traffic on the Midland Highway, this roundabout will improve safety at the intersection for all road users by:
- improving traffic flow
- providing safer turning opportunities
- encouraging drivers to slow down
- improving the visibility of the intersection and installing new lighting
Background
Shepparton is a major regional transport hub with increasing numbers of heavy vehicles travelling through the area to service growing regional and metropolitan populations. On average, 4,500 vehicles use the Midland Highway each day, approximately 15% of which are heavy vehicles.
At the intersection of Central Avenue and Midland Highway, the proximity of local industrial areas is increasing the number of heavy vehicles using this intersection to access the Midland Highway or the Shepparton Alternative Route.
In the five-year period between July 2015 to June 2020, there were four crashes at this intersection resulting in serious injuries.
The upgrade of this intersection will provide a safer connection for road users travelling between Shepparton, Benalla and Wangaratta.
