Mernda stabling yard extension

We’re extending the Mernda stabling yard to keep network operations running smoothly.

Overview

Melbourne’s rail network is expanding to meet future transport needs and will require more space to park or ‘stable’ the additional trains on our network.

Train stabling facilities are a critical part of the network, as they make it possible to provide high frequency services for passengers.

The Mernda stabling yard extension project will deliver additional train stabling capacity to the network with four new stabling positions at the existing stabling yard. Creating more stabling capacity will also prepare the network for future service improvements.

Project update - July 2026

In July 2024 we announced our plans to extend the Mernda Stabling Yard. Since then, we’ve been undertaking site investigations, talking to local residents and completing development stage works.

We are now ready to start construction from date TBC.

The new section of the Mernda Stabling Yard has been designed to minimise noise in accordance with government guidelines and requirements. We’re also extending the noise wall along the eastern boundary of the stabling yard.

Closure of Informal Path

The informal path between Plenty Road and Schotters Road will be permanently closed from late July to allow work to commence.

Detour signs will be in place.

We’re working with council and exploring a new footpath on the eastern side of Plenty Road.
