Project update - November 2024
Work to relocate the Greater Western Water freshwater pumping station and pressure release station is nearing completion. The pumping station has been moved 450m west of its original location, and the pressure release valve removed.
Before we move to the next phase to begin construction of the new intersection, we need to close Leakes Road north of the Melton Highway on weekend of the 9-10 November.
When to expect us
As part of these works, Leakes Road will be fully closed on the northern side of the intersection from 5am Saturday 9 November to 7pm Sunday 10 November.
What to expect
Works will take place during the day and overnight on Saturday 9 November into the evening of Sunday 10 November.
During these works, the speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h through the work zone.
Crews will use modern equipment to keep noise to a minimum. However, the works will unavoidably produce noise.
There will be high noise levels at night from heavy machinery and excavation. For the safety of road users and workers, reversing beepers are a requirement on all machinery.
Temporary lights will be used around the work site in the evenings.
Detours
During the works, detours will be in place from 5am Saturday 9 November through to 7pm Sunday 10 November. Please allow additional travel time of up to 10 minutes.

What we're doing
To make it safer and easier to travel through the intersection of Melton Highway and Leakes Road, we’re aligning the intersection to a traditional cross road, adding turning lanes and installing traffic and pedestrian lights.
Works to relocate services commenced in mid-2023 with no impact to neighbouring properties or motorists. Works to relocate the Greater Western Water fresh water pumping station will have some impacts to motorists. There will be no disruption to water supply during these works.
We’ll be aligning the current staggered intersection to a traditional cross road with traffic and pedestrian lights.
We will also:
- relocate vital utility services to ensure we can safely work to realign the intersection
- widen the intersection to allow for turning lanes and improved lane configuration
- resurface the area and apply new line marking
- install new street lighting to create a safer road environment at night
- build new kerbing and improve drainage
- remove and trim some vegetation to improve sight lines.
You can get a better idea of how the intersection will look when it’s finished in these 3D before/after images.
