Melton Highway and Leakes Road intersection upgrade

The new traffic lights have been switched on at the upgraded Melton Highway and Leakes Road intersection in Plumpton, making it safer and smoother for road users in the growing Melton region.

Construction work is now complete, with only some minor close-out activities, including sign installation, remaining to be done. 

Thank you for your patience over the past 12 months while we completed these important safety improvements.  We are grateful for the patience and support of the Plumpton and surrounding communities and road users while we worked to upgrade this busy intersection.

What we've done

The former Melton Highway and Leakes Road intersection was staggered and uncontrolled, with no crossing facilities for pedestrians.

We’ve upgraded the intersection by adding traffic signals, aligning the northern and southern approaches, adding turning lanes and installing pedestrian-activated crossings.

Early works commenced in mid-2023, including the significant task to reposition the Greater Western Water freshwater pumping station. This work was completed in April 2025.

Since then, we have: 

• Completed significant earth and drainage works across the intersection
• Aligned the northern and southern approaches of Leakes Road - making it a traditional crossroad.
• Widened the intersection to allow for new turning lanes and improved lane configuration
• Installed traffic lights and pedestrian facilities on all quadrants
• Resurfaced the whole intersection and applied new line marking
• Installed new street lighting to create a safer nighttime road environment
• Upgraded drainage infrastructure, and added new kerbs and gutters.
