McKillops Bridge (McKillops Road), Deddick Valley, repair works
We’re carrying out repair work on McKillops Bridge (McKillops Road) which crosses the Snowy River in Deddick Valley, East Gippsland.
Underway
Overview
We’re repairing and strengthening McKillops Bridge to maintain its current load limit. The works involve replacing some timber components of the bridge, including the deck timbers.
Work is expected to start at the end of April 2025 and be completed by mid 2025.
Traffic impacts
- the bridge will remain open, but short closures (up to 15 minutes) may occur
- a reduced speed limit
- the ongoing load limit will remain in place during the works, and
- traffic controllers will be on-site to help vehicles cross safely.
Heritage preservation
McKillops Bridge is of heritage significance. The current bridge was built in 1935.
The deck is 255 metres long which makes the bridge the longest concrete, metal-truss and timber bridge in Victoria.
It is located in some of Victoria’s most spectacular scenery and spans a broad, deep gorge close to where the where the Snowy River meets the Deddick River.
The bridge consists of welded-steel trusses seated on reinforced-concrete piers that support an elaborate timber stockbridge superstructure.
All works will be in accordance with the work permit conditions of Heritage Victoria.
To maintain the bridge’s traditional appearance, carpentry work for the replacement of timber components will match the original design.
We have sourced timber that closely matches the original materials. This approach ensures that while essential repairs are made, the bridge retains its familiar look and character.
Environmental considerations
We are minimising impacts on vegetation, wildlife, and waterways and have obtained a Works on Waterways permit from the North East Catchment Management Authority.
