Maroondah Highway-Goulburn Valley Highway intersection, Alexandra

We are looking at how drivers, pedestrians and cyclists use the intersection, including traffic speed and movements.

The intersection review will help us better understand how people use the intersection and identify any issues and possible improvements.

Speed review

As part of the speed review, we considered current road conditions, existing speed limits and Victoria’s speed zone policy.

For example, the section of the Maroondah Highway (Grant Street) in Alexandra is an important connector for through traffic, including freight, while also passing through the town centre where people walk, ride and access local businesses. 

As a result of the speed review, the following speed changes will be made;

• the speed on the Maroondah Highway (Grant Street) from Vickery Street to the Goulburn Valley Highway (Downey Street) will be reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h
• the speed on the Goulburn Valley Highway (Downey Street) from Myrtle Street to the Maroondah Highway (Grant Street) will be reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h
• the speed on the Maroondah Highway (Downey Street) to Bayley Street be reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h.

We have engaged with Murrindindi Shire Council on the speed zone recommendations and expect the changes to be implemented in the coming months.

Intersection movement data

In July 2026 we will be installing cameras on each leg of the Maroondah Highway (Grant Street) and Goulburn Valley Highway (Downey Street) intersection in Alexandra. The cameras will be in place for about a week.

The cameras will track the movement of cars, trucks, pedestrians and cyclists using the intersection.

The cameras will help us understand how people use the intersection, how they move through it and whether there are any safety issues.

The cameras will not be used for enforcement. They will not record identifying details such as number plates. The information will only be used to help assess how the intersection is working.

Next steps

Through previous engagement with the community and working closely with Murrindindi Shire Council, we know there are concerns around the use and safety of the Maroondah Highway (Grant Street) and Goulburn Valley Highway (Downey Street) intersection.

We also know this intersection is an important route for freight and heavy vehicles.

Transport Victoria will review the speed limit changes, camera data and feedback from Murrindindi Shire Council before deciding what further improvements may be needed.
