Marong western freight corridor

We’re investigating options for the proposed future alignment of the Marong Western Freight Corridor at Marong.
Project status:

Planned

Update - June 2025

We’ve developed preliminary concept designs and identified the land required for the potential future construction of the Marong Western Freight Corridor Option 5.

The concept design for the Marong Western Freight Corridor Option 5 is a four-lane (two lanes in each direction) arterial road, which intersects the Calder Alternative Highway, runs adjacent to the Wimmera Highway, crosses the disused railway line, and extends north to connect to the Calder Highway.

The freight corridor would service the future development of the Bendigo Regional Employment Precinct and seeks to provide connection from the Calder Alternative Highway and Calder Highway to the south and west of the Marong township

The proposed freight corridor aims to remove some heavy vehicle traffic from the town centre.

This is a planning project. There are currently no plans for the construction of the Marong Western Freight Corridor.

Concept design

A preliminary concept design including identifying the land potentially required for construction has been developed for the preferred Marong Western Freight Corridor Option 5.

We will be seeking feedback on the preliminary concept design from landowners directly impacted and adjacent to the preferred alignment.

The preliminary concept design includes the following;

  • A three leg, dual lane roundabout at the Calder Alternative Highway with a northbound free flow lane onto the Marong Western Freight Corridor for transport efficiencies
  • Four lanes (two in each direction) within the Bendigo Regional Employment Precinct (BREP), with a service lane utilising part of the existing Wimmera Highway
  • A left-in only access arrangement to the BREP opposite Landry Lane
  • Five leg, dual lane roundabout at Wimmera Highway, McCreddons Road and Wilsons Hill Road, with one leg providing access to the BREP
  • Four lanes (two in each direction) in the northern section traversing the east side of McCreddons Road, diverting to the west side McCreddons Road north of the disused railway line and connecting to the Calder Highway
  • Three leg, dual lane roundabout at Calder Highway, with a north-west bound free flow lane.

Background

Determining a preferred alignment for the Marong Western Freight Corridor included consideration of findings from various technical studies, consultation with landowners, key stakeholders and government agencies, and a multi-criteria assessment.

While we identified option five as the preferred alignment, this is not a final decision. Based on the assessment undertaken, option five has the lowest impact on biodiversity, land acquisition and areas of cultural and historic heritage sensitivity.

This option also provides greater traffic and heavy vehicle benefits and has a shorter construction route length.

Next steps

We will be seeking feedback on the preliminary concept design from landowners directly impacted and adjacent to the preferred alignment (Option 5).

After receiving feedback on the preliminary concept design, we will carefully consider all landowner, stakeholder and community input and refine the plan accordingly.
