Mallacoota-Genoa Road Upgrade
Planned
Overview
The Australian Government has committed $10 million towards upgrading sections of Mallacoota-Genoa Road between Princes Highway East and Mallacoota.
These improvements will provide safer and more resilient travel for residents, heavy vehicle operators, emergency services, and visitors, strengthening the vital transport connection between the Princes Highway East and Mallacoota.
Key features of the upgrades, developed through investigations and community feedback, reflect our commitment to building a road that meets both current and future needs.
They include:
- Realigning the hairpin bend near Coolwater Creek
- Widening curves near Horn Bay
- Adding safety improvements near Double Creek, such as a slow vehicle turnout lane.
Final assessments are underway to identify the necessary environmental approvals and permits. These outcomes will inform the design and shape the final program of works.

Protecting our environment
We are committed to balancing community connectivity whilst preserving the unique natural environment surrounding Mallacoota-Genoa Road, including the Croajingolong National Park.
Appropriate environmental offsets will be required to be sourced to meet the conditions of any required approvals and permits.
An offset is required to be purchased when native vegetation is impacted, ensuring the ongoing protection and management of Victoria’s important biodiversity.
Community consultation
From January to March 2022, we carried out community consultation on the Engage Victoria platform to gather feedback on access and safety.
A Community Reference Group (CRG) was also formed to help identify key priority locations along the route. Our project team continues to provide updates to the CRG at key milestones.
Next Steps
We have completed key pre-construction activities, including preliminary designs, environmental assessments, cultural heritage investigations, and the submission of a funding proposal. These efforts have clarified legislative requirements, timelines, and costs needed to deliver the project.
Final assessments are underway to identify the necessary environmental approvals and permits. These outcomes will inform the design and shape the final program of works.
We are committed to ensuring the Mallacoota-Genoa Road upgrade meets the community’s needs for safer and more resilient travel while safeguarding the surrounding environment.
We will keep the community informed as we achieve key milestones and move closer to beginning construction on the ground.
