Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road intersection safety improvements

We're installing a dedicated left turn lane and making safety improvements at Edgars Road and Mahoneys Road intersection in Thomastown to improve traffic flow and make the intersection safer for everyone.

Project status:

Underway

Update – May 2026

Crews are working on site to complete safety and traffic flow improvements at Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road intersection.

Between May and July, sections of Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road at the intersection will be closed at night, for approximately six weeks. Crews will work at the intersection at 8pm to 6am, Sunday through to Thursday.

Heavy vehicle detours will be in place on Dalton Road and the Metropolitan Ring Road when Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road are closed at night. Local detours will also be in place on Hughes Parade.

Crews will also work on sections of Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road at the intersection during the day between 7.30am and 6pm, Monday through to Friday.

Please note all dates and times are subject to change due to weather and the contractors schedule of works.

What to expect during works

  • Access into and out of Edgars Road from Mahoneys Road will be closed at times.
  • No left turns out of Wilsons Boulevard onto Mahoneys Road during night works. Please follow local detour signs.
  • Footpath closures with pedestrian detours and traffic controllers in place around the intersection.
  • PTV 902 bus services to Airport West and Chelsea Railway Station will operate as usual. Expect minor delays to travel through the intersection.
  • Access to businesses at the intersection will be open at all times.
  • Travel delays on Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road. Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.
  • A reduced speed limit in place during and after work hours to keep crews and all road users safe.
  • Medium to high levels of noise during the day and night. Crews use modern equipment to keep noise to a minimum; however, the works will unavoidably emit some noise and light. For the safety of road users and workers, reversing beepers are required on all machinery.

What we’re doing

To improve safety and traffic flow at Mahoneys Road and Edgars Road intersection, we will:

  • widen Edgars Road to make space for a dedicated left turn lane to improve traffic flow
  • realign and install a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights across the left turn slip lane on Edgars Road
  • install mast arms to make the traffic lights more visible to motorists approaching the intersection
  • install safety barriers on the centre island and left hand side of Edgars Road to prevent side-on crashes
  • install a bike off-ramp on Edgars Road near Horne Street so bike riders use the intersection safely
  • install new street lights and signs at the intersection and resurface sections of Edgars Road and Mahoneys Road
  • remove trees on Edgars Road where we’re widening the road and to make space for the new safety barriers.
