London Bridge safety upgrades, Ballarat-Maryborough Road, Talbot

We’re undertaking vital safety upgrades to the London Bridge on Ballarat-Maryborough Road, near Talbot.

Project status:

Underway

Project overview

We’re undertaking safety upgrades to the London Bridge on Ballarat-Maryborough Road, near Talbot.

This narrow bridge is located on a high speed road and is on a curve at the bottom of a hill. These upgrades are in response to local concerns about safety on the bridge, including limited visibility of vehicles approaching and larger vehicles crossing the centre line of the bridge, increasing the risk of a collision.

Timeline

The project includes work across two stages, beginning in February 2026.

Stage 1 works will include:

  • vehicle activated warning signs on both approaches to the bridge, warning of the narrow structure ahead
  • trimming of vegetation and removing tree branches surrounding the bridge to improve visibility of oncoming traffic.

Stage 2 works will include:

  • the removal of existing kerbs, barriers on the bridge and approaches, and replacement with side mounted barriers to increase the width of the road shoulder on the bridge
  • changing the centre line marking to double white lines to prohibit overtaking on the bridge
  • resurfacing.

Traffic impacts

During both stages of works, a reduced speed limit and lane closures may be in place during construction. Please allow extra time for your journey.

Next steps

Stage 1 is expected to begin in February 2026 and take approximately 2 weeks to complete.

We will keep the community informed as the project progresses.
