Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road), Woodend pedestrian safety improvements

We’re working with Macedon Ranges Shire Council to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) near the intersection of High Street (Avenue of Honour) at Woodend.

Project status:

Planned

Overview

As a first step, we will work with council to move the pedestrian crossing point on Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) further away from the intersection. This will provide an immediate improvement in pedestrian safety while we consider options for an ultimate solution at this location.

The pedestrian crossing point will be relocated further down Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road), approximately 80 metres from the High Street (Avenue of Honour) intersection.

Footpath and pedestrian fencing will be extended to the new crossing point to guide people to the appropriate crossing location.

The new crossing location will;

  • improve safety for pedestrians by having them cross the road further away from the intersection,
  • reduce the potential conflict between vehicles using the intersection and pedestrians crossing the road,
  • provide improved visibility of approaching vehicles for pedestrians so they can determine when to cross safely and have enough time to do so,
  • provide improved visibility of pedestrians for motorists so they can slow or stop as needed.

We expect works to relocate the pedestrian crossing point to be undertaken in July 2026.

Transport Victoria will also be undertaking a speed review of the area to determine if any speed zone changes are recommended.

Pedestrian refuge

Immediate works on Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) at Woodend are focused on the safety benefits of relocating the existing crossing point further away from the intersection with High Street (Avenue of Honour).

At this point, works do not include the construction of additional infrastructure, for example a pedestrian refuge.

Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) is a heavy vehicle route and an approved route for Oversize Overmass (OSOM) vehicles.

The installation of a pedestrian refuge can only be considered if there is enough road width to allow construction of the refuge in the centre of road, alongside the operation of heavy and OSOM vehicles.

This is not considered a safe option for initial works on Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road).

Next steps

Investigation of options for further improvements on Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) are the focus of collaboration between Transport Victoria and Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

This work will include engagement with key stakeholders including nearby schools, bus operators and Public Transport Victoria.

Options for improvement will consider the need for improved safety and connection for pedestrians and vulnerable road users.

Work will also consider the operation of the arterial road network and Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) as a key arterial connector for heavy vehicles.

We are committed to determining a viable ultimate solution for improved safety on Lancefield-Woodend Road (Romsey Road) and will provide updates to the community as planning progresses.

Further investigation, and engagement with key stakeholders, will help inform options for further improvements.
