Kalimna Path and Princes Highway safety upgrades Kalimna

We’ve upgraded the Princes Highway at the intersections of Lookout Road and Hotel Road in Kalimna and improved the footpath from the Kalimna Lookout to North Arm Bridge, Lakes Entrance.

Project status:

Complete

Update – January 2026

Works on the Princes Highway at the Lookout Road and Hotel Road intersections and on the footpath from Hotel Road to North Arm Bridge have been completed.

The highway is fully open to traffic and the temporary speed limit has been removed. The footpath is open to pedestrians.

Intersection improvements

The intersection works are close to the Lakes Entrance Lookout and the road to Jemmys Point Lookout, two popular tourist attractions in Kalimna with panoramic views of the Gippsland Lakes and Bass Strait.

The works have improved safety and access for the community and visitors to this scenic location.

Works on the intersection included the installation of concrete medians on the Princes Highway at the intersection with Lookout Road and Hotel Road.

The concrete medians are safer than the previous painted medians as they form a physical barrier and are more effective at preventing crashes.

The pedestrian refuge on the Princes Highway was improved by concrete works and the installation of raised safety platforms on the approaches to the refuge.

Raised safety platforms are designed to slow down vehicles before the pedestrian refuge making it safer for people to cross the highway.

Street lighting at the intersection was also improved and the intersection was resurfaced with improved line markings and signage.

The works reinforce to drivers approaching Kalimna that they have entered a reduced speed environment with pedestrians around and are an aesthetic improvement to the western gateway to Lakes Entrance.

Footpath improvements

The footpath from the Lakes Entrance Lookout at Hotel Road to North Arm Bridge has been reconstructed and the pedestrian fencing replaced.

Parts of the retaining wall for the path needed to be rebuilt to improve the path’s long-term stability.

The safety barriers separating pedestrians from traffic on the highway have been replaced with double-sided safety barriers offering improved protection to pedestrians.

Thank you for your patience as we delivered this important project.

Overview

The Australian and Victorian governments have committed $1.98 million for safety improvements to the Kalimna Path, and the Princes Highway intersections at Lookout Road and Hotel Road in Kalimna.

Lakes Entrance is a major tourist destination on the Gippsland Lakes. The Princes Highway is the main access for road users and pedestrians between Kalimna and Lakes Entrance.

Kalimna Path provides pedestrian access across North Arm bridge between Lakes Entrance and Kalimna.

The path provides direct links to the scenic lookouts situated on the southern side of the Princes Highway, which are popular tourist attractions due to their panoramic views of the Gippsland Lakes and Bass Strait.

Environmental impacts

We understand the complex balance of connecting communities whilst caring for our natural environment.

We’re committed to performing our works in a thoughtful and considered way to reduce impact on the environment.

We share the value the community places on the environment and have worked hard to minimise disturbance to native wildlife and vegetation.

Some vegetation needs to be trimmed for the improvements to Kalimna Path.

We have obtained the required environmental approvals for these works, which will be carried out in accordance with a Construction Environmental Management Plan.
