What we’re doing

  • Extending the centre island with line marking and installing a small traffic island on Gaffney Street near Pascoe Vale Station

  • Widening the footpath on Gaffney Street near Heath Street to provide more space for pedestrians.

  • Introducing a safer speed limit of 40km/h on Gaffney Street from Heath Street to Somerset Street
  • Introducing a safer speed limit of 40mkm/h on Park Street from Somerset Street to Stewart Street

What to expect during works

  • Ann Street will be closed at Gaffney Street for Tuesday, 22 April 2025 for four weeks.
  • Lane closures on Gaffney Street.
  • Some medium-level construction noise is expected during daytime working hours with trucks, people and specialised equipment working near the site. Local area disruption will be minimised as much as possible.
  • Access to properties and businesses will be maintained throughout the works except during night works on Gaffney Street at the pedestrian crossing from Monday, 5 May 2025, for 5 nights. On these nights, Gaffney Street will be closed at Ann Street to all traffic between 8.30pm and 5.30am for asphalting works and properties on Gaffney Street near the crossing will have pedestrian access only.  We will contact nearby households to confirm the dates of the night works once construction has begun and weather impacts are known.

Improving active transport

Creating safer roads, intersections and crossings for pedestrians and bike riders will help save lives and encourage people to use active modes of transport. When pedestrians and bike riders are involved in a crash with a vehicle, they’re at a higher risk of being severely injured or killed.

Improving walking and bike riding connections that enable more Victorians to walk or get on their bike for everyday trips supports the climate change pledge of 25% active transport mode share by 2030.

If 50% of short vehicle trips were switched to riding a bike or walking, the Victorian economy would save $165million every year in congestion, health, infrastructure, and environmental costs.
