Improving safety for pedestrians on Belmore Road
We’re building a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Belmore Road, near the corner of Box Hill Crescent, in Mont Albert North.
Planned
About the project
The new signalised pedestrian crossing in this location will provide a safe place for Koonung Secondary College students and the community to cross Belmore Road.
This location is busy at school drop off and pick up times due to the proximity of the school entrance on Box Hill Crescent.
The new signalised pedestrian crossing will improve walkability in the area and provide residents, public transport users and the wider community with safer access to bus stops, the nearby Elgar Park Playground, sports grounds, and the Koonung Creek Trail.
Works are expected to begin in mid-2026. We will keep the community updated on construction timelines.
This project is being co-funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments under the Road Safety Program.
What we’re planning
- Installing a signalised pedestrian crossing on Belmore Road between Elgar Road and Box Hill Crescent.
- Installing a red signalised ‘stop’ arrow for right-turning traffic exiting Box Hill Crescent when the green ‘walk’ light is operating at the crossing.
There will be changes to parking at the crossing location. Up to six parking spaces on Belmore Road are expected to be removed to provide space for the pedestrian crossing.
Why we’re doing it
These improvements will:
- Enhance safety and connectivity for students accessing Koonung Secondary College and other nearby facilities.
- Encourage the uptake of walking for community members, particularly those wanting to access the nearby Elgar Park playground and sporting facilities, and the Koonung Creek Trail.
- Better connect locals to bus stops on both sides of Belmore Road.
