Hyland Highway landslip repair works

We have completed complex landslip repair works on the Hyland Highway near Carrajung Lower to stabilise the road, reopen the closed lane and improve safety.

Project status:

Complete

Project update – November 2024

Construction work to repair and stabilise the Hyland Highway near Carrajung Lower has been completed.

Both lanes of the highway are now open, and the temporary speed limit has been removed.

Two landslips occurred in November and December 2023 after sustained heavy rainfall in the area.

Our crews responded quickly to assess the condition of the highway and carry out emergency works to reopen it safely.

The damaged lane and shoulder remained closed, with temporary traffic signals managing traffic flow and a 40 km/h speed limit in place.

Repairing an arterial road after a landslip is a significant safety and construction challenge. Extensive planning, geotechnical investigations, design and excavation began immediately.

Due to the complexity of the project, detailed engineering designs were required, and specialist contractors were engaged to carry out the repairs.

Construction began in early July 2024 and took four months to complete. Crews conducted major earthworks and built a 50-metre-long, seven-metre-high retaining wall.

Ground anchors were installed to stabilise the slip face and strengthen the wall’s load-bearing capacity. This process required detailed geotechnical inspections and testing.

The damaged lane was reconstructed with upgraded drainage and safety barriers. Final resurfacing and line marking were completed before the road reopened.

These repairs have improved the highway’s longevity at this location and enhanced safety for all road users.

The Victorian and Australian Governments jointly funded the project as part of a $99.5 million rebuild and recovery package to deliver long-term repairs to Victoria’s most severely damaged roads following major flood events.

Thank you for your patience while we completed this essential and complex work.

Protecting our environment

Environmental approvals for these works were obtained and work carried out in accordance with a Construction Environmental Management Plan.

Work was limited as much as possible to already disturbed areas and fencing erected to protect vegetation and native fauna habitat.
