Hume Freeway Rest Area (Barry’s Bay) Wandong
We’re improving the rest area known as “Barry’s Bay” on the southbound carriageway of the Hume Freeway at Wandong.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments as part of the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program. The total cost of this project is $2.6M.
Overview
Works at the Rest Area on the southbound carriageway of the Hume Freeway focus on a safer environment for the travelling public while using these facilities.
Works include
- Improve and widen pavement, parking layout, concrete barriers and amenities.
- Formalise parking bays and improve facilities to better support heavy vehicle rest opportunities.
- Upgrade safety barriers and deliver associated works consistent with the Hume Freeway Rest Area Strategy.
- Enhance drainage, lighting and toilet facilities to meet the needs of road users and the freight industry.
- Improve delineation between vehicle types and reduce conflict points to support a safety environment for drivers and pedestrians.
Traffic disruption
Our crews will be on site from 7am to 6pm weekdays. No works are planned for Sundays or public holidays.
Works are expected to start in April 2026 and take approximately 20 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
During works, the rest area/parking bay will be closed to all traffic.
Please observe changed traffic conditions, plan ahead and allow extra time.
