Hume Freeway maintenance works
Thomastown to Kalkallo
What we’re doing
We’re undertaking resurfacing works across a 20-kilometre stretch of the Hume Freeway/Craigieburn Bypass between the Metropolitan Ring Road in Thomastown and Kalkallo.
These works will create a smoother and more reliable road surface for the many road users who rely on this vital corridor every day.
When to expect us
Works are expected to commence on 7 April and be completed by mid-May 2025.
Crews will work at night, Sundays to Thursdays between 9pm and 4.30am, to minimise traffic disruption.
There will be no works over Easter (17 to 21 April) and the Anzac Day long weekend (24 to 27 April).
Dates and timelines are subject to favourable weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.
What to expect
- Lane closures and full road closures in place at times
- When road closures are required, a signed detour will be in place via Sydney Road/Hume Hwy to the west and Epping Road/Craigieburn Road E to the east (for vehicles under 19m)
- There will be periods of high noise levels, vibrations and dust at the work sites – we’ll work to minimise these impacts as much as possible
- For safety, reversing beepers are required on all machinery
- During works requiring lane closures, there will be reduced speed limits in place to ensure the safety of crews and all road users.
Plan ahead and allow an extra 20 minutes when travelling through the area. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these important maintenance works.

Beveridge to Clonbinane
What we’re doing
- Works have been completed on a damaged section of road surface on the Hume Freeway at Beveridge. Our crews will return in May to complete final linemarking.
- Works are underway to repair a section of damaged road surface on the Hume Freeway at Clonbinane. Works on the southbound lanes (heading toward Melbourne) of the Hume Freeway at Clonbinane began in late March and will take approximately four weeks to complete, weather permitting. Our crews will return in May to complete final linemarking.
- Several sections of resurfacing works will be delivered on the Hume Freeway between Wandong and Wallan during March and April. These works are expected to start late March and take approximately four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
The works involve sections of resurfacing on both the southbound lanes (heading toward Melbourne) and northbound lanes (heading out of Melbourne).
Traffic disruption
To minimise disruption, road works on the Hume Freeway between Beveridge and Clonbinane will be delivered at night, with lane closures and reduced speeds in place.
For the safety of our road crews, please follow the direction of workers on site. Ensure you adhere to the reduced speed limits in place and allow extra time.
Both lanes of the Hume Freeway will be open during the day. Reduced speed limits may still be in place as required. Drive carefully and be aware of changed road conditions.
Works will be delivered from 9pm to 5am each night, Sunday through to Thursday. There will be no works on Thursday and Friday nights.
All works will stop over the Easter period and the weekend following Anzac Day.
Note: To complete the resurfacing works between Wandong and Wallan, Hume Freeway on-ramp and off-ramp closures will be required at times. Take note of electronic messaging signs on-site advising of ramp closures and detour routes.
Road worker safety
Road works are crucial to ensuring we can effectively maintain the safety and driveability of our road network. Dangerous driving behaviour at road works sites has a devastating effect on our road workers mental and physical health.
Keep our road workers safe – slow down, be aware of changed conditions and drive safely.
Slow down and follow the speed limit
If you are approaching a road works speed sign you must:
- slow down to the speed shown on any temporary signs
- travel at or below the speed limit until you pass a speed sign showing a different speed limit.
Reduced speed limits are in place around roadworks and when there are people working on the roadside. The temporary speed limit applies even if you can’t see roadworks being carried out.
There can be dangers around work zones including:
- narrow lane widths
- barriers close to traffic lanes
- deep trenches
- loose gravel on the road
- soft road surfaces
- humps and drops in the road
Some dangers are easy to spot during the day, but much harder to see at night. Driving at a slower speed gives you more time to see the danger and avoid an incident.
