Benefits

  • increase capacity at the intersection
  • improve travel times
  • improve safety for all road users.

Project background

Ferntree Gully Road is an important arterial road in Melbourne’s east, stretching between Oakleigh and Ferntree Gully. Approximately 40,000 vehicles pass through this section of Ferntree Gully Road every day.

In 2019, Knox City Council opened the Henderson Road bridge to connect the north and south sections of Henderson Road over the Corhanwarrabul Creek. Since the bridge opened, traffic on Henderson Road has increased significantly, particularly for freight and heavy vehicles accessing commercial properties in the area.

In 2022, the Department of Transport and Planning upgraded the nearby Henderson Road and Kelletts Road Intersection to help improve traffic flow and travel times and allow safer movements in and out of Henderson Road.

This project is being delivered as part of the Australian Government’s $14.26 million commitment to the Henderson Road Upgrades project.

Upcoming works

We’ll work from 8pm to 5am, Sunday 24 May to Tuesday 26 May 2026, to shift our barriers into the centre of Ferntree Gully Road and install drainage.

Ferntree Gully Road traffic changes

Until late September 2026, Ferntree Gully Road is reduced to one lane in each direction at the Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road intersection. The speed limit is also reduced to 40km/h in our work zone.

During this time, the traffic lights at the intersection of Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road are turned off to allow for better traffic flow through the area.

Harley Street and Henderson Road access changes

Harley Street and Henderson Road temporary left in, left out movements only at Ferntree Gully Road.

Harley Street detours will be in place via:

  • O’Connor Road, Laura Road and Rickards Avenue
  • U-turn on Ferntree Gully Road at the intersection near Bunnings Scoresby.
