Benefits

  • increase capacity at the intersection
  • improve travel times
  • improve safety for all road users.

Project background

Ferntree Gully Road is an important arterial road in Melbourne’s east, stretching between Oakleigh and Ferntree Gully. Approximately 40,000 vehicles pass through this section of Ferntree Gully Road every day.

In 2019, Knox City Council opened the Henderson Road bridge to connect the north and south sections of Henderson Road over the Corhanwarrabul Creek. Since the bridge opened, traffic on Henderson Road has increased significantly, particularly for freight and heavy vehicles accessing commercial properties in the area.

In 2022, the Department of Transport and Planning upgraded the nearby Henderson Road and Kelletts Road Intersection to help improve traffic flow and travel times and allow safer movements in and out of Henderson Road.

This project is being delivered as part of the Australian Government’s $14.26 million commitment to the Henderson Road Upgrades project.

What we’ve done

Works are progressing well at the intersection. Since the start of major works in March, we’ve:

  • built the new left slip lane out of Henderson Rd onto Ferntree Gully Road
  • built the new concrete stand for bin collection on Ferntree Gully Road
  • upgraded the Harley Street/Ferntree Gully Road bus stop
  • installed safety barriers
  • relocated power poles and other utilities to facilitate Henderson Road widening
  • upgraded drainage, kerbs and placed new asphalt on Ferntree Gully Road.

Final stage of major works

Major construction to upgrade the intersection of Henderson Road and Ferntree Gully Road is nearing completion.

From 8pm, Friday 31 July to 5am, Monday 3 August, we’ll close Ferntree Gully Road in both directions between Harley Street and Kathryn Road to complete asphalting and line marking quickly and safely.

When this is completed, the intersection will reopen.

We’ll also work from 7pm to 5am, Tuesday 4 August to Wednesday 5 August, to complete line marking. During this time, Henderson Road and St Laurent Rise will be closed at Ferntree Gully Road.

While the intersection is closed, Ferntree Gully Road will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Stud Road and Scoresby Road for businesses and local access only.

Detours will be in place via:

  • Stud Road, High Street Road, Burwood Highway and Scoresby Road
  • Kelletts Road, Napoleon Road and Glenfern Road.
