We’re improving safety and efficiency for all road users at this busy intersection in Newtown.

Project status:

Underway

We’re delivering upgrades to improve safety at the Hamilton Highway (Aberdeen Street) and Shannon Avenue intersection in Newtown.

This project will include:

  • the installation of fully-controlled right turns on the western approach of Hamilton Highway and the southern approach of Shannon Avenue
  • extending the right-turn lane on the Hamilton Highway to improve efficiency for vehicles travelling through and turning onto Shannon Avenue
  • traffic light sequencing improvements
  • updated signage and line marking on all approaches of the intersection.

Works are expected to begin in July 2026 and take up to a week to complete.

Construction impacts

Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of weekend works.

Traffic management, including single lane closures, delays of up to five minutes and a reduced speed limit, will be in place during construction to protect the safety of crews and road users.

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.
