Goulburn Valley Highway - Safety Barrier from Seymour to Shepparton

We’re improving road safety on the Goulburn Valley Highway between Seymour and Kialla.

We’ve improved safety on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Nagambie with the installation of flexible safety barrier.

The  project involved the  installation of 190 kilometres of flexible safety barriers on the Goulburn Valley corridor between the Hume Freeway and Ross Road, south of Kialla. The works  improve safety and reduce the risk of run-off-road and head-on crashes.

Background

The Goulburn Valley Highway in Victoria, connecting with the Newell Highway in NSW and the Leichhardt and Gore Highways in QLD, forms a national corridor serving major freight links between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway from Shepparton to Seymour started in 2000 with the highway now duplicated from the Hume Freeway to north of Arcadia.
Road safety infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps to reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.

When a vehicle hits a flexible safety barrier, the posts bend at the base and the ropes catch the vehicle like a net. This helps to absorb the impact and shield the vehicle from hitting oncoming traffic, or into roadside hazards such as trees.

These upgrades are being delivered thanks to a joint investment from the Australian Government through the Roads of Strategic Importance program and the Transport Accident Commission.
