Geelong Road, Whitely Parade and Mitford Parade safety upgrades
As part of the Australian Government Black Spots Program, we have improved safety at Princes Highway-Geelong Road, Whitely Parade and Mitford Parade in West Footscray.
Complete
What we’ve done
To make the intersection of Whitely Parade and Princes Highway-Geelong Road safer for motorists and pedestrians, we have:
- introduced a right turn ban out of Whitely Parade. Drivers traveling on Whitely Parade wanting to head westbound towards Brooklyn can enter Princes Highway-Geelong Road from the service road and make a U-turn at Angliss Street intersection.
- reshaped the traffic island at the entrance of Whitely Parade to facilitate left turn movements from Princes Highway-Geelong Road onto Whitely Parade.
- installed a raised zebra pedestrian crossing on the Princes Highway service road east of Whitely Parade to make the road safer for public transport users.
- updated signage and line marking at the intersection.
In 2024, we completed safety improvements at Princes Highway-Geelong Road and Mitford Parade intersection as part of this upgrade.
To make the intersection of Princes Highway-Geelong Road and Mitford Parade safer for motorists and pedestrians, we have:
- introduced a right turn ban out of Mitford Parade. Drivers on Mitford Road wanting to head westbound towards Brooklyn can turn left onto Princes Highway-Geelong Road and make a U-turn at the traffic lights at the Roberts Street/Somerville Road intersection.
- built a traffic island on Mitford Parade to facilitate left only turn movements.
- installed a speed hump and a raised pedestrian crossing along the Princes Highway service road to slow traffic down.
- updated signage and line marking at the intersection.
- Updated line marking.
Benefits
These upgrades will:
- improve safety for all road users
- help divert non-local traffic onto arterial roads and discourage them from using the local street network as a thoroughfare route and,
- help slow traffic down on the service road and improve safety for pedestrians as they travel to and from the bus stop.
Project background
Princes Highway-Geelong Road is a major route through the western suburbs of Melbourne, linking to the Princes Freeway (M1) at its south-western end.
Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. The Australian Government Black Spots Program targets dangerous road locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring.
The Australian Government provides funding for measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at Black Spots, reducing the risk of crashes. The Black Spots Program has an economic benefit as well, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.
