Ferntree Gully Road pedestrian operated signals, Oakleigh

We’re improving safety and connectivity for pedestrians, public transport users and the local community on the busy Ferntree Gully Road in Oakleigh.

Project status:

Underway

Update - March 2026

Works to install pedestrian operated signals on Ferntree Gully Road between the Princes Highway and Stamford Road, Oakleigh, will start on Tuesday 10 March 2026 and are expected to be completed by mid-2026.

Crews will be working from 10am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and with works on weekends and nights if required.

These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

Traffic impacts

We understand roadworks can be disruptive and make every effort to minimise the impact to road users.

To keep everyone safe, a 40km/h speed limit will be in place with lane closures at times.

The left slip lane to the Princes Highway will be closed for the construction of a raised safety platform crossing, which is expected to take up to two weeks.

Please look out for changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the area.

We will provide advance notice on significant traffic changes as the project progresses.

Thank you for your patience as we deliver this important safety project.

Details

The upgrade includes:

  • pedestrian operated signals
  • footpath and pedestrian safety fencing on the centre median
  • raised safety platform crossing on the left slip lane to Princes Highway
  • improved street lighting, and
  • improved signage and line marking.

The new pedestrian operated traffic signals will be linked to the nearby traffic signals to minimise any changes to the way traffic flows.

Traffic will be stopped for pedestrians to cross the first carriageway and reach the centre median.

Traffic will then be stopped on the other carriageway for pedestrians to complete the crossing, while allowing traffic on the first carriageway to flow.

Benefits

The upgrades will:

  • improve safety and connectivity between residential, recreational and commercial areas
  • improve safety and connectivity for public and active transport users, and
  • reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes.

Overview

The pedestrian operated signals will create a safe space to cross for people accessing nearby parks, childcare centres and retirement villages.

Ferntree Gully Road is a busy road carrying 22,000 vehicles each day with limited crossing points for pedestrians.

The signals will help connect people with Brickmakers Park, Hurst Reserve, shops, businesses nearby childcare centres, retirement villages and bus stops.

The safety improvements will support a wide range of users including people with disabilities, people using mobility aids and devices, people with prams, shopping, and delivery trolleys.
