Essendon station works

We’re carrying out underground asset relocation and piling works on the platforms at Essendon Station in August as part of our works program for the station.

Project status:

Planned

August to September 2026 Works

We’ll be completing underground asset relocations and piling works on the platforms.

These works will coincide with trains not running on the Craigieburn Line to reduce disruptions to passengers. Buses will be replacing train services during this period.

  • Sunday 23 August to Wednesday 26 August, from 10pm to 4am each day
  • Monday 31 August to Wednesday 2 September, from 10pm to 4am each day
  • From 9pm Friday 28 August to 4am Monday 31 August.

What to expect

  • medium to high levels of noise at Essendon Station and around the Grice Crescent rail access pad at times
  • use of heavy machinery including excavators, dump trucks and non-destructive digging (NDD) truck
  • use of hand tools and concrete pouring
  • temporary fencing around the work site and pedestrian management in place in the station underpass as required. There will be limited access to Essendon Station during this time
  • temporary closure of the Russell Street commuter car park (excluding accessible parking) from Wednesday 26 August to Tuesday 1 September. The closed car spaces will allow for work crews to safely access the rail corridor and use the area as a temporary laydown for materials
  • increase in traffic from work vehicles and crews accessing the station and surrounding local streets.

Grice Cresent Railway Access Pad

Work crews will be using the Grice Crescent rail access pad to machinery and vehicles safely into the rail corridor and moving them down to Essendon Station.

Machinery or vehicles may be parked on the street temporarily while waiting to get to/from site.

Temporary traffic management will be in place to safely manage pedestrian and vehicle movement through the area.

No materials or equipment will be stored here during works.

Construction works will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption to the local community wherever possible. The timing of these works may change depending on weather or unavoidable circumstances.
