Dairy Supply Chain Road Upgrades

Enhancing the road infrastructure supporting the dairy industry in south-west Victoria through safety upgrades.

Overview

The Dairy Supply Chain Road network in Victoria’s south-west facilitates the daily transport of dairy products in what is Australia’s largest dairy production area.

The region is responsible for 24% of the nation’s milk production, with 392,000 cows producing 2.05 billion litres of milk annually across 1,300 farms.

The road network supports local communities and agricultural activities, and is vital for the efficient, reliable transport of dairy products to domestic and international markets.

Big Build Roads will upgrade about 6km of road across two sites on behalf of Transport Victoria:

Cobden-Stonyford Road at Cobden and Bullaharre
Princes Highway West at Pirron Yallock.

improve safety for all road users
support local agricultural activities
ensure a more efficient, reliable journey for freight vehicles to transport dairy products to domestic and international markets
cater for future growth in passenger and freight vehicle volumes in south-west Victoria.

Update - March 2026

Work to upgrade two sections of Cobden-Stonyford Road between Evans Road, Cobden and Shenfields Lane at Bullaharre is now complete.

We thank you for your patience while we undertook these important safety improvements.

While major works are complete, there will be minor finishing works over the coming weeks, including signage installation and landscaping. We will also undertake a final pavement seal in early 2027. Lane closures may be needed at times to complete these works.

What we delivered

As part of the upgrade of Cobden-Stonyford Road, we:

rehabilitated pavement
installed new safety barriers
installed new signage and line marking.

Princes Highway West

Planning is also underway to upgrade about 3km of Princes Highway West at Pirron Yallock. As planning progresses, further information about the timing for construction will be provided to the community.
