Cranbourne Road and Beach Street safety improvements
We’ve improved safety and connectivity on Cranbourne Road and Beach Street in Frankston.
Complete
Update – May 2026

We’ve completed works and switched on the new pedestrian crossing on the westbound lanes of Cranbourne Road, near the intersection of Beach Street.
The new pedestrian crossing connects to the existing crossing on the eastbound lanes via a footpath in the centre median, improving access to schools, shops, bus stops and other local amenities.
We’ve also delivered additional pedestrian and motorist safety improvements near the intersection to create a safer environment for everyone.
We thank the community for their patience and support while we delivered these important safety improvements.
What we’ve done
- Installed a signalised pedestrian crossing on the westbound lanes of Cranbourne Road, near the intersection of Beach Street.
- Installed a raised pedestrian crossing with flashing lights on Beach Street.
- Introduced a 40km/h school speed zone on Beach Street.
- Constructed kerb outstands, installed pram ramps and street lighting at the new signalised crossing.
- Realigned Cranbourne Road Service Road to improve visibility for drivers exiting the service road.
- Relocated the Craig Street / Cranbourne Road bus stop to make way for the new signalised crossing.
- Removed the right turn from Frawley Street onto Cranbourne Road to make the intersection safer.
- Removed the existing school crossings on Cranbourne Road near Craig Street and on Beach Street near Ashleigh Avenue
- Laid new asphalt and line marking near the new crossings on Cranbourne Road and Beach Street.
We’ve also installed new electronic speed limit signs on Cranbourne Road to support a new 40km/h school speed zone near the intersection. We’re working with the power authority to establish a power connection to the new signs to enable them to be switched on.
We expect the new school speed zone on Cranbourne Road to be active by the end of May.

Safe school speed zones
Beach Street
We've introduced a new 40km/h school speed zone on Beach Street between Campbell Street and Cranbourne Road. The 40km/h school speed zone applies between 8am – 9:30am and 2:30pm – 4pm on school days.
Cranbourne Road
Once the power connection is complete, a 40km/h school speed zone will operate on Cranbourne Road;
- eastbound between Nursery Avenue and Frawley Street, and
- westbound between Kurong Avenue and Craig Street.
Electronic speed limit signs will display 40km/h between 8am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4pm on school days, and the regular 70km/h speed limit at all other times.

Project benefits
This project has:
- Improve pedestrian safety for people crossing Cranbourne Road and Beach Street.
- Made it safer and easier for people to walk to nearby schools, shops, bus stops and other local amenities.
- Made it safer for students walking to and from school during peak school times.
Background
Cranbourne Road is a busy arterial road that provides a key connection to McMahons Road to the west and Peninsula Link to the east.
Approximately 26,000 vehicles travel along this section of Cranbourne Road every day.
An activity centre, nearby schools, bus stops and sporting facilities generate a high level of pedestrian activity near the intersection.
There is a signalised pedestrian crossing on the eastbound lanes of Cranbourne Road, but until now there has been no safe way for pedestrians to cross the westbound lanes.
The new signalised pedestrian crossing will improve connectivity and provide a safe route for pedestrians to cross all lanes on Cranbourne Road.
This project is joint funded by the Australian and Victorian governments under the Road Safety Program.
