Corio Quay Road (Bayside Road) bridge upgrades

We are delivering vital safety upgrades to four bridges on Corio Quay Road (Bayside Road), North Geelong, to meet the demands of modern freight vehicles.
Project status:

Underway

This project is delivered by the Australian and Victorian Governments, as part of the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (formerly the Bridges Renewal Program).

Update – January 2025

Works to upgrade the bridges will begin in late February, and are expected to be completed in mid-2025. Start dates will be published on this website when confirmed.

The following bridges will be upgraded:

  • south-bound over the rail-line, south of Langdon Street
  • north-bound over the rail-line, south of Langdon Street
  • north of Langdon Street over the rail-line, and
  • Cowies Creek bridge.

Upgrade works will include:

  • strengthening bridge decks and placing a new surface
  • upgrading barriers to meet modern strength requirements
  • rebuilding the road on both bridge approaches, and
  • new asphalt, line marking and signage.

Disruptions

From late February, there will be significant changes in traffic conditions along Corio Quay Road while these works are underway. Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are expected.

Works will be undertaken from Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of nightworks and weekend works.

Throughout construction, lane closures, detours and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place to keep drivers and workers safe.

Traffic controllers will be on-site while works are underway, and temporary traffic lights will manage traffic at other times.

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

Closures and detours

During major construction activities, the southbound lane of Corio Quay Road will close between North Shore Road and Langdon Street. A temporary detour will be in place via North Shore Road, Princes Highway and Corio Quay Road (northbound). The northbound lane of Corio Quay Road will remain open.

Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are expected.

Details will be communicated to directly impacted businesses and residents and published on the project website.

We understand these works will be disruptive and we thank you for your patience as we deliver this important project.

Pedestrian and cyclist access

Pedestrian and cyclist access on Corio Quay Road will be maintained throughout the works, with temporary arrangements in place at times. Please follow all signage directions.

Property access

Every effort will be made to minimise impacts to residents, businesses and the wider community during the project.

While access to properties will be retained, there will be periods of disruption to local roads and traffic flow.

The contractor will contact impacted residents and businesses directly should access be disrupted.
