Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) and Jeeralang North Road intersection upgrade, Hazelwood North

We’re upgrading the Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) and Jeeralang North Road intersection in North Hazelwood to improve safety for all road users.
Project status:

Planned

Overview

This $2.7m project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and the Australian Government under the Road Safety Program.

The Churchill-Traralgon Road and Jeeralang North Road intersection is located in Hazelwood North.

Churchill-Traralgon Road, also known as Hazelwood Road, is an arterial road managed by the Department of Transport and Planning.

The road connects Traralgon and Churchill, where the Federation University Gippsland campus is located.

Jeeralang North Road is managed by Latrobe City Council and is a key connection for the power, logging and quarry industries in the area, as well as for properties in Hazelwood North.

The Churchill-Traralgon Road and Jeeralang North Road intersection is a T-intersection with right turn lanes and left slip lanes.

The intersection has a high crash history with three crashes, one fatal and two serious injuries, recorded between 2016 and 2021.

Speed was a contributing factor to the crashes. We are conducting a speed review of Churchill-Traralgon Road and Jeeralang North Road and will advise of any speed changes.

Raised safety platforms on the left slip lane on Churchill-Traralgon Road and on the approach to the intersection on Jeeralang North Road will reduce vehicle speed and improve safety.

Details

The intersection upgrade works include:

  • Two raised safety platforms
  • Concrete centre median and left turn lane separator on to Jeeralang North Road.
  • Improved sightlines for vehicles turning onto Churchill-Traralgon Road
  • Improved alignment of left turn slip lanes
  • Improved road surface and line marking
  • Upgraded lighting.

Raised safety platforms

Raised safety platforms are designed to slow down vehicles at an intersection.

They are similar to speed humps but are longer, lower and smoother so drivers don’t have to brake and accelerate hard as they approach and exit.

They are designed so drivers will slow down as they pass through sections of road or entering intersections where speed compliance has previously been an issue.

The raised safety platforms further support the speed reduction on the Churchill-Traralgon Road.

Benefits

The benefits of the upgrade include:

  • Improved road safety
  • Reduced likelihood of serious crashes
  • Smoother, safer surface for road users
  • Improved visibility.

What happens next?

Pre-construction works are being finalised with construction works expected to start in early 2025.

We will keep the community informed as the project progresses.
