Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) and Jeeralang North Road intersection upgrade, Hazelwood North
Underway
Update – February 2025
Construction works on Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) and Jeeralang North Road intersection in Hazelwood North are expected to start from Monday 10 February 2025 and be completed by mid-2025.
Jeeralang North Road closure
To keep everyone safe, it's necessary to close Jeeralang North Road in both directions at the intersection with Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) for the duration of the works.
We expect to reopen Jeeralang North Road before the end of April 2025 and will be making every effort to open it sooner and minimise the impact to residents and road users.
- A detour will be in place via Church Road and Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) for vehicles wanting to travel on Jeeralang North Road at Hazelwood North (see detour map below).
- Local access to properties on Jeeralang North Road will be maintained at all times.
- The load limit for Church Road will be temporary lifted while the detour is in place.
- A 40km/h speed limit will be in place on Churchill-Traralgon Road (Hazelwood Road) during construction.
Please look out for changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the area. We will provide advance notice on any traffic changes as the project progresses.
We understand roadworks can be disruptive and thank you for your patience as we deliver this important project.

Raised safety platforms
Raised safety platforms are designed to slow down vehicles at an intersection.
They're similar to speed humps but are longer, lower and smoother so drivers don’t have to brake and accelerate hard as they approach and exit.
They're designed so drivers will slow down as they pass through sections of road or entering intersections where speed compliance has previously been an issue.
The raised safety platforms further support the speed reduction on the Churchill-Traralgon Road.
Benefits
The benefits of the upgrade include:
- Improved road safety
- Reduced likelihood of serious crashes
- Smoother, safer surface for road users
- Improved visibility.
Protecting our environment
We share the community’s commitment to protecting our environment and are dedicated to improving road safety while minimising environmental impact.
Our project teams develop designs to retain as much vegetation as possible, however, some trees and native vegetation need to be removed to achieve the sight lines and widen the road to improve safety for motorists.
Environmental approvals for these works have been obtained and work will be carried out in accordance with a Construction Environmental Management Plan.
Overview
This $2.7m project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and the Australian Government under the Road Safety Program.
Churchill-Traralgon Road is an arterial road managed by the Department of Transport and Planning. Jeeralang North Road is managed by Latrobe City Council and is a key connection for the power, logging and quarry industries in the area, as well as for properties in Hazelwood North.
The Churchill-Traralgon Road and Jeeralang North Road intersection is a T-intersection with right turn lanes and left slip lanes.
The intersection has a high crash history with three crashes, one fatal and two serious injuries, recorded between 2016 and 2021.
Speed was a contributing factor to the crashes. We are conducting a speed review of Churchill-Traralgon Road and will advise of any speed changes.
Raised safety platforms on the left slip lane on Churchill-Traralgon Road and on the approach to the intersection on Jeeralang North Road will reduce vehicle speed and improve safety.
