Casterton-Apsley Road bridge replacement
Underway
The Casterton Apsley Road bridge replacement works will ensure the structure is safer and more durable for future transport needs, improving connectivity for locals and industry in Western Victoria.
Works are expected to begin in June 2026 and take up to five months to complete.
Construction impacts
The bridge replacement will require a short stretch of the Casterton-Apsley Road, between Sharam Road and Portland Lane, to be closed for the duration of works. Please see section highlighted on the map below.
During the closure, please follow advised detours via Edenhope in the east or Penola in the west, to allow work to be completed as efficiently as possible.
We understand roadworks can be disruptive, and we thank you for your patience during this project. Road users are encouraged to plan their journey to minimise disruptions.
Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

Map above: Casterton-Apsley Road section to be closed from June 2026 for up to five months.
To allow the installation of a new safety barrier and a new stabilising barrier for the bridge, the removal of five native trees (one mature and four small trees) is required. None of the trees are culturally significant and offset planting will be undertaken.
Background
Casterton-Apsley Road is a rural road located in West Wimmera Shire, close to the South Australian border. South of Poolaijelo, the road is a two-lane undivided road with a single-lane bridge crossing Salt Creek.
The existing bridge over Salt Creek has now aged to the point of needing replacement.
Once completed, the upgraded bridge will meet current standards and the demands of modern freight vehicles, providing a safe and secure future road connection in the state’s west for all road users including farmers, freight and emergency services.
