Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection improvements
Planned
Project update - June 2025
Planning is underway to deliver improvements at the Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection to improve safety and amenity for all road users.
To help inform the design, we will be completing site investigations along Canterbury Road to identify underground services.
When to expect us
Site investigation works will take place mostly at night to reduce disruptions to traffic. Investigation works will take place from Monday 16 June 2025 to Wednesday 18 June 2025, between 8:30pm and 5:30am. In addition, crews will work a daytime shift on Thursday 19 June 2025, from 7am to 7pm.
What to expect
Night works between 8:30pm and 5:30am:
- Temporary lane closures on Canterbury Road, west of Balfour Avenue to Aumann Street.
- One lane will remain open in each direction of Canterbury Road with a reduced speed limit in place to keep crews safe.
- Left turn only when entering Canterbury Road from Heathmont Road and the Canterbury Road Service Road, with signed detours in place.
- Left turn only when entering or exiting Dickasons Road at Canterbury Road, with signed detours in place.
- Access to all businesses at the Heathmont Shopping Centre will be maintained.
During the day shift on Thursday 19 June 2025 between 7am and 7pm, you may notice crews completing inspections along the side of Canterbury Road. There will be no impacts to traffic during day works.
What’s next
We expect major construction to start in early 2026. We’ll provide further updates to the community as we progress with our planning.
What we're doing
Improvements at the intersection will include introducing a shared path crossing across Canterbury Road with bicycle lanterns, flashing ‘Give Way to Pedestrians’ signs, and fully controlled right hand turns from Canterbury Road to improve safety. Our works will also create a wider footpath on the northern side of Canterbury Road across the rail bridge.
This is a complex location where multiple transport modes - rail, road (including freight), and active transport interface, and requires careful planning to deliver safety and connectivity improvements within site constraints.
Background
Approximately 36,000 vehicles travel on Canterbury Road every day. It is a key freight route and provides an east-west link from Camberwell to Montrose, including access onto the Eastlink.
In the 10 years leading up to 2020, there have been seven reported crashes at the Canterbury Road and Heathmont intersection. This project will help make it safer and easier for drivers and pedestrians to travel through this busy intersection.
Nearby projects
We’re improving safety, connectivity and traffic flow at the Canterbury Road and Waterloo Street, Great Ryrie Street and Sunset Drive intersections in Heathmont.
