Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection improvements

Update - August 2026

Works are progressing well to improve the Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection in Heathmont. So far, we have completed:

• traffic signal works, including installing new infrastructure above and below the ground
• demolition works and construction of the new centre median on the bridge
• reconstruction of the right turn lane
• drainage improvements
• bridge strengthening works

What to expect: From Friday 31 July to late 2026

Vehicle access and traffic changes:

• No right turns from Canterbury Road into Heathmont Road and at the Dickasons Road intersection. Detours are in place for right turn restrictions via U-turn lanes.
• One lane is closed on Heathmont Road at the Canterbury Road intersection from the end of July for approximately 3 weeks, with signed detours in place
  • Northern leg of Heathmont Road: Drivers can continue to turn left from Canterbury Road into Heathmont Road. Drivers exiting Heathmont Road will need to detour via Lisgoold Street, Viviani Crescent and Balfour Avenue.
  • Southern leg of Heathmont Road: Drivers can continue to turn left or right when exiting Heathmont Road onto Canterbury Road. Drivers on Canterbury Road wanting to access Heathmont Road will need to detour via Dickasons Road and, Bennett Avenue or Orchid Street.
• The entrance into Campbell Street from Canterbury Road is closed until late September, with a signed detour via Alvena Crescent, Royal Avenue and Leawarra Drive.
• Vehicle access to the Magic Hand Car Wash, Adrians Kebab Stop and Adrians Acai will continue to be maintained via Heathmont Road. The driveway on Canterbury Road will be temporarily closed.
• Lane closures will remain in place on Canterbury Road between Mountain View Road and Allens Road, with a reduced speed limit in place.

Traffic lane on Heathmont Road (south leg) reopens on weekends

To support increased traffic movements for events at HE Parker Reserve, we will reopen the traffic lane entering Heathmont Road (south leg) during the following dates and times:

• Friday afternoon (7 August) to 6am Monday 10 August 2026
• From 6pm Friday 14 August to 6am Monday 17 August 2026
• From 6pm Friday 21 August to 6am Monday 24 August 2026

Pedestrian and bike rider access changes:

• The footpath on the northern side of the Canterbury Road bridge will be temporarily closed. A detour will be in place via the footpath on the southern side of the bridge. Alternatively, pedestrians can use the unsignalised rail pedestrian crossing, north of Heathmont Station.
• The bus stop on Canterbury Road for Route 679 located outside Heathmont Station will be temporarily closed. A temporary bus stop will be located on the concrete island at Campbell Street.

What’s next 

This next stage of works and associated traffic management is expected to be in place until late 2026. 

We’ll provide an update on the traffic management arrangements for the final stage of works, which will involve resurfacing the road to provide a smoother driving surface.

What we’re doing

• Upgrading the traffic lights with fully controlled right hand turns from Canterbury Road into Heathmont Road.
• Extending the right turn lane on Canterbury Road by removing the U-turn lane. Drivers will be able to make a U-turn at the traffic lights.
• Installing new bike lanterns and providing a shared crossing for pedestrian and bike riders on Canterbury Road.
• Installing flashing ‘Give way to pedestrians’ signs to alert drivers turning right from Heathmont Road.
• Widening the footpath on the northern side of the rail bridge and installing upgraded pedestrian safety fencing on both sides of the rail bridge.   
• Minor realignment of the road.
• Improving access to public transport by providing smoother footpath surfaces, in line with disability access standards.
• Improving drainage and signage.
• Resurfacing Canterbury Road between Dickasons Road and Campbell Street.

Background

Approximately 36,000 vehicles travel on Canterbury Road every day. It is a freight route and key east-west connection from Camberwell to Montrose, with access to Eastlink.

In the 10 years leading up to 2020, there have been seven reported crashes at the Canterbury Road and Heathmont intersection.

This is a complex location where multiple transport modes - rail, road (including freight), and active transport interface. Careful planning is needed to improve safety and connectivity improvements while working within site constraints.
