Brunswick Tram Depot upgrade
We're upgrading the Brunswick Tram Depot as we add larger trams and improve how the network operates.
As part of our final upgrades works at the Brunswick Tram Depot, we’re:
- Installing a pair of level-access stops at Moreland Road, at Cameron Street, to improve accessibility and connectivity.
- Building a new tram depot exit onto Sydney Road to minimise delays to services in the morning peak and reduce congestion on Moreland Road.
There will be detours in place on Sydney Road and Moreland Road, and public transport service changes during these works.
These works will take place in three stages of 24-hour works:
Cameron Street: 1am, Friday 21 August to 10pm, Monday 5 October 2026
What to expect
- Closure of Cameron Street between Prowse Street and Moreland Road.
- 24-hour works.
- Access to businesses will continue to be via Tinning Street and the council carpark.
- Pedestrian access maintained where safe to do so.
- Ongoing closure of Upfield Shared Use Path with bike rider detours via Tinning and Colebrook streets.
- Extremely high levels of noise at times while we break out the tram tracks, complete saw cutting, deep excavation and breakthrough underground materials.
Sydney Road: 9pm, Friday 21 August to 5am, Friday 4 September 2026
What to expect
- Closure of Sydney Road between Davies Street and Mitchell Street
- 24-hour works.
- Traffic delays and vehicle and bike rider detours in place with traffic management and signage in place.
- Service changes for tram routes 6, 19 and 58
- Extremely high levels of noise at times while we break out the tram tracks, complete saw cutting, deep excavation and break through underground materials.
- Pedestrian access to be maintained and local businesses remain open.
Moreland Road: 3am, Sunday 13 September to 5am, Friday 2 October 2026
What to expect
- Closure of Moreland Road between Cameron Street and Sydney Road
- 24-hour works.
- Traffic delays and vehicle and bike rider detours in place with traffic management and signage in place.
- Service changes on tram routes 6, 19 and 58
- Extremely high levels of noise at times while we break out the tram tracks, complete saw cutting, deep excavation and break through underground materials.
- Pedestrian access to be maintained and local businesses remain open
We will work with residents and businesses to minimise access impacts as much as possible and businesses will remain open. Please continue to support local businesses during these essential works.
Other works around the Brunswick Tram Depot Precinct
From now until late 2026, works will continue around the Brunswick Tram Depot precinct to relocate and upgrade underground services.
Sydney Road
We’re working with third-party providers until the end of July to relocate underground services along Sydney Road. To complete these works safely, there will be lane closures at times on Sydney Road between Peveril Street ad Mitchell Street from now until late July 2026.
Colebrook Street
We’re undertaking sewer service investigations on Colebrook Street. To complete these works safely, the northern end of Colebrook Street near Moreland Road will be closed on between 7am and 5pm, from Monday 13 July to Friday 17 July 2026.
Cameron Street - service relocations
We’re undertaking service relocation works on the corner of Cameron Street and Peveril Street. To complete these works safely, access to Peveril Street from Cameron Street will be detoured via Sydney Road from 7am to 5pm, Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July 2026.
Cameron Street - night works
There will be night works along Cameron Street while we continue to upgrade the Brunswick Tram Depot on weeknights, 9pm to 7am, Monday 29 June to Friday 10 July 2026.
Sydney Road
Friday 3 July and Saturday 4 July 2026, 9pm to 7am - We’re setting up concrete barriers and fencing along Sydney Road near the Brunswick Tram Depot. To complete these works safely, a section of Sydney Road between Donald Street and Mitchell Street will be closed overnight to ensure the safety of workers as they set up some of the barriers.
Saturday 4 July to Friday 7 August 2026 - We’re constructing drainage and, power supplies and upgrading underground services along Sydney Road between Donald Street and the Brunswick Tram Depot. We’re also installing and modernising street furniture on Sydney Road including bike hoops, parking signs and traffic signalling infrastructure.
To complete these works safely, there will be temporary lane, carpark and footpath closures on Sydney Road across between Donald Street and the Brunswick Tram Depot at various times from 9pm, Friday 3 July to 5am, Thursday 7 August 2026.
