What we are doing

Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) is progressing detailed planning for the Bridgewater Road and Henty Highway Upgrade on behalf of Transport Victoria.

The Bridgewater Road bridge currently has a height clearance of 5.2 metres, preventing larger trucks from using this route, forcing them to take long detours through local roads.

The upgrade aims to:

  • make it quicker and easier for over-dimensional trucks to travel to and from the Port of Portland, including those carrying equipment for windfarm projects and renewable energy
  • reduce the number of large trucks using local roads.

All feedback provided through an online survey and information sessions held by the Department of Transport and Planning in late 2023 has been shared with Major Road Projects Victoria and will inform the development of the upgrade project.

Overview

The Henty Highway is a key freight route for tourism, forestry, windfarms, mineral sands and dairy production. Around 6,000 vehicles travel via the Henty Highway each day (including approximately 1,500 trucks).

Funding

This project is part of the Australian Government’s $58.6 million investment into the Green Triangle region.
