Tram track works on Bourke and Spencer streets

To keep you moving safely and reliably, we’re replacing ageing tram tracks at Bourke and Spencer streets near Southern Cross Station.
The Bourke and Spencer Street intersection will be closed from 9pm, Sunday 15 February to 5am, Thursday 26 February 2026.
The works will involve replacing the tram tracks and road surface in sections of Bourke and Spencer streets near Southern Cross Station. We will also be installing new poles and overheard wires.
Avoid driving in the area as major traffic delays of 30+ minutes are expected.

What to expect
- Extremely high noise levels during the first four to five days of the works.
- The Bourke and Spencer streets intersection will be closed during works.
- Bourke Street will be closed between King and Spencer streets
- Spencer Street will be closed between Little Bourke and Little Collins streets.
- Major traffic delays of 30+ minutes are expected. Avoid driving in the area and detour via the new Wurundjeri Way extension and King Street.
- Little Bourke and Little Collins streets will remain open to east west traffic.
Please follow the signage around works.
Emergency services will have access at all times.
Public transport impacts
Tram routes 86 and 96 will be impacted by the works from first tram Monday 16 February to last tram Wednesday 25 February.

Route 86 trams
No Route 86 trams will run between Spencer Street and Docklands. The Route 86 tram will run from Bundoora RMIT to Stop 4 Queen Street on Bourke Street only.
Travel options
Use trams on Elizabeth, William and Swanston streets and change to Route 30 trams on La Trobe Street.
Passengers can also walk 200 metres (3 minutes) from Stop 11 Melbourne Museum or Stop 10 Nicholson Street on Victoria Parade to connect with Route 30 on La Trobe Street.
Route 30 will be extended to run to Waterfront City, Docklands during the works.
Route 96 trams
Route 96 trams will run in two sections between:
- East Brunswick and Stop 4 Queen Street on Bourke Street
- Stop 124 Batman Park on Spencer Street and St Kilda Beach
Travel options
Passengers can take Route 12 or 109 trams on Collins St and change to Route 96 trams at Stop 124 Batman Park.
Walk 300 metres (5 minutes) between Collins St and Stop 4 Queen St on Bourke Street for trams towards East Brunswick.
Tram stop changes
The following stops will be closed during the works:
- Stop 3 William St on Bourke Street
- Stop 1 Southern Cross Station on Bourke Street
- Stop 122 Southern Cross Station on Spencer Street
- Stop 119 La Trobe St on Spencer Street
- Stop 120 Lonsdale St on Spencer Street
Taxi Rank
A Taxi rank is located between the Collins Street exit of Southern Cross Station (near Woolworths) and the corner of Collins and Spencer streets.
Night Network
From Friday 20 February to Saturday 21 February 2026.
Route 75 trams will run between Vermont South and Waterfront City Docklands during Night Network.
Passengers are encouraged to follow signage at stops and around the work zone during the tram works.
Passengers with accessibility needs
Travellers Aid is running the new Yarra Trams My Tramsfer accessible minibus to assist passengers with accessibility needs between Stop 4 Queen Street and Stop 124 Batman Park.
The service will operate from Monday 16 February to Wednesday 25 February between 6am and 9pm each day. A one-way journey may take up to 20 minutes, subject to traffic conditions around the work zone.

Look for the blue My Tramsfer Flag for pick up locations next to the listed tram stops.
Bookings aren't needed for the My Tramsfer service.

Pedestrians
Footpaths will remain open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures when we are upgrading the footpaths.
