Bogong High Plains Road Structure Rehabilitation Works
Works to reconstruct a road embankment, upgrade structures and culverts on Bogong High Plains Road are now complete – ready for the start of the 2026 ski season.
Complete
Our crews have been working hard since January to reconstruct the embankment and complete vital structural works, building a stronger, safer road for visitors to the Alpine region this winter.
While working in a constrained road environment, navigating summer events and managing changing weather conditions, the works have been successfully completed on schedule, delivering a great outcome for all road users.
Overview

Works included the removal of the existing structural retaining walls and earthworks embankment, construction of a new structural retaining wall, rock/earth embankment and new culverts for improved drainage.

Working in Victoria’s Alpine areas can present challenging conditions for our Transport Victoria road crews.
There is often limited space within the road reserve, which restricts the use of heavy machinery and requires additional safety considerations.
Weather conditions can vary dramatically, from hot days to unseasonable cold, and conditions can change quickly in the Alpine environment.
We also seek to keep roads open to through traffic during works to maintain access to the area for residents, businesses and visitors. Our Alpine roads are often the only way in and out for these stakeholders, so we work hard to deliver improvements without the requirement for a full road closure.
Maintaining access is particularly important for tourism in the region, with works on Bogong High Plans Road managed around cycling and car rally events over the summer months.
All of these elements combine to make working in the Alpine region both challenging and rewarding. We’re pleased to have completed the delivery of these works on Bogong High Plains Road and thank the community for their patience during the construction period.

Driving in Alpine Areas
A timely reminder for motorists heading to the Alpine region this snow season to take extra care in challenging wintery conditions and to be prepared for extreme weather like black ice, blizzards and fog.
Drivers can play their part by ensuring their vehicles are properly equipped and in good condition before heading to the snow.
Check your tyre tread and pressure ahead of your journey. Also check your lights and batter. Put anti-freeze in the radiator, pack sunglasses for snow glare and include an ice scraper for when you're ready to leave the mountain.
Motorists with diesel vehicles are advised to fill their tank with alpine diesel or Winter Mix which is available at services stations in region.
All vehicles (including 4WDs) entering Victorian alpine resorts must carry snow chains during the declared snow season and you must fit them at designated “Fit Chains Here” bays when signage dictates.
Practice fitting chains before your trip and only fit chains to the driving wheels. Carry a torch plastic garbage bag and gloves to make fitting easier.
