Bendigo city centre pedestrian operated signals
Underway
Project update - March 2026
Pedestrian signals now active at the McCrae Street (McIvor Highway) and Mundy Street intersection

Works at the intersection of McCrae Street and Mundy Street in Bendigo are now complete, with the new pedestrian operated signals now active. The upgrade will provide pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users with safer access to work, shopping and education in this busy part of Bendigo.
Completed works include:
- Installation of new traffic lights and pedestrian operated signals (POS) on the north side of McCrae Street
- Upgrading the existing bus-stop on the corner of McCrae Street and Mundy Street (bus stop has now reopened)
- Implementation of a right turn ban from Mundy Street onto McCrae Street to reduce the risk of crashes. Drivers will still be able to turn left out of Mundy Street at this location.
- Improving the road surface and footpath at the intersection, installation of new signs and line marking.
Together with the recent installation of the pedestrian signals at the intersection of Chapel and Hargreaves Streets, these upgrades form part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s planned City Centre Strategic Cycling Corridor on Mundy Street, linking the Bendigo Creek Trail and the Back Creek Trail.
Access to Mundy Street from McCrae Street
Access to Mundy Street from McCrae Street will remain closed while work continues on the construction of a shared user path by the City of Greater Bendigo. More information on this project is available on the City’s website.
Thank you for your patience during these important safety upgrades.
Car parking changes
Wherever possible we have minimised impacts to on-street car parking, however completing safety upgrades at these intersections require the removal of some parking spaces.
One car park has been removed on McCrae Street, behind the existing bus-stop.

Chapel Street (McIvor Highway) and Hargreaves Street
Pedestrian operated signals now active - August 2025

The pedestrian operated signals are now operational at the intersection of Chapel and Hargreaves Streets, providing pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users with safer access to work, shopping and education in this busy part of Bendigo.
Completed works include:
- Installation of pedestrian-operated traffic lights on the southern side of Chapel Street, opposite the Bendigo fire station
- Installation of raised safety platforms on Chapel Street at the approach to the new lights to slow down vehicles.
- New kerbing to prevent drivers from turning right out of Hargreaves Street onto Chapel Street to reduce the risk of crashes. Drivers can still turn left out of Hargreaves Street at this location.
- Improvements to the road surface and footpath at the intersection, installation of new signs and linemarking.
The intersection design was developed in consultation with Fire Rescue Victoria (who operate from the Hargreaves Street site) to ensure that emergency vehicle access is maintained as a priority within the intersection upgrade.
These signals will form part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s planned City Centre Strategic Cycling Corridor on Mundy Street, linking the Bendigo Creek Trail and the Back Creek Trail.
Car-parking changes
Wherever possible we have minimised impacts to on-street parking, however it is necessary to remove some car parks to install the new pedestrian operated signals at the intersection.
Two on-street car parks have been removed from the north side of Hargreaves Street and the remaining spaces changed from angle parking into three parallel car parks.
In addition, one car park has been removed on Hargreaves Street in front of the Fire Rescue Victoria building.
