Bellarine Highway Safety Improvements

The Bellarine Highway Safety Improvements project aims to create a safer transit corridor through Moolap and Wallington by reducing the risk of collisions and improving intersection safety.

What we are doing

We’re working to improve the safety for thousands of drivers who travel the Bellarine Highway between Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

The safety improvements include:

Wallington

  • Installing about 1km of median safety barriers, extending just north of Curlewis Road and just south of Swan Bay Road
  • Removing the right turn movement from Swan Bay Road onto Bellarine Highway
  • Building a U-turn facility with deceleration lane about 200m east of Swan Bay Road

Moolap

  • Installing about 5km of median safety barriers and about 2km of Geelong-bound carriageway verge safety barriers between Moolap Station Road and Clifton Avenue
  • Removing the right turn movement from Resort Boulevard onto Bellarine Highway.
  • Building a U-turn facility with deceleration lane about 200m west of Resort Boulevard
  • Building a right turn deceleration lane into Greenside Grove Road.

Initial planning work is underway, and construction timelines will be known once planning has further progressed.

Overview

The Bellarine Highway is a key route with approximately 34,000 vehicles a day travelling along Bellarine Highway through Moolap, while about 22,000 vehicles pass through Wallington.

Over the past seven years, there has been one fatal collision and several serious crashes along these sections of the Highway.

Funding

The Australian and Victorian Government are delivering this project as part of the Road Safety Program.
