Bacchus Marsh Intersection Upgrades

Big Build Roads is upgrading two major intersections in Bacchus Marsh on behalf of Transport Victoria.

Project status:

Underway

Major works continuing

Main Street and Grant Street intersection

We’re continuing to upgrade the Main Street and Grant Street/Gisborne Road intersection to replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights and signalised pedestrian crossings.

These works include:

  • demolition works to widen the road
  • completing utility relocations
  • installing new concrete kerb lines
  • reinstating pavement areas
  • installing traffic signal equipment
  • installing new bus stop infrastructure and connecting footpath

Station Street and Griffiths Street Intersection

We’re continuing to upgrade the Station Street/Griffith Street and Grant Street/Parwan Road Intersection by:

  • replacing the existing single lane roundabout with a dual lane roundabout
  • adding pedestrian crossings at Griffith Street and Parwan Road
  • introducing a right turn ban for vehicles travelling from South Maddingley Road onto Parwan Road.

This includes:

  • saw cutting and demolition works to widen the roads
  • completing utility relocations
  • installing new concrete kerb lines
  • completing concrete works for the upgraded shared use path
  • removing and upgrading the traffic islands at the centre of the roundabout, as well as the smaller traffic islands at each leg of the roundabout and the exit of South Maddingly Road.

Traffic Impacts

To complete these works safely:

  • The roundabout intersection of Station Street, Griffith Street, Grant Street and Parwan Road will be closed in all directions from Sunday 9 August to late September 2026, 9pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday.
  • South Maddingley Road will be closed at Parwan Road in both directions from Sunday 9 August to late September 2026, 9pm to 6am each night, Sunday to Thursday.
  • Main Street will be closed in both directions between Clarinda Street and Gell Street from 9pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday until late September 2026.

Some of these works will require temporary changed parking conditions along sections of Grant Street and Main Street at night.

These works require specific weather conditions and may need to be rescheduled at short notice. Please visit bigbuild.vic.gov.au/disruptions or refer to roadside messaging for specific dates, times and detours.

Permanent Parking Changes

To create the space needed to upgrade the intersection and add new turning lanes, some on-street car park bays will be permanently removed along Main Street and Grant Street.

This includes:

on the eastbound side of Main Street between Gisborne Road and Gell Street, from Sunday 9 August 2026

on the eastbound side of Main Street between Clarinda Street and Gisborne Road from late 2026

along the southbound direction of Grant Street between Main Street and Millbank Street from late 2026.

New parking

Once the roundabout of Main Street and Grant Street is removed and signalised for vehicles and pedestrians, we’ll remove the existing pedestrian crossing on Main Street between Gisborne Road and Gell Street near the police station.

Once the pedestrian crossing is removed, we’ll use that space for additional on-street car park bays along:

  • the westbound direction in front of the police station
  • the eastbound direction on Main Street.

These offset car parks will be in place by early 2027.

Bus impacts: Routes 433 and 434

The bus stop on the corner of Main Street and Gisborne Road (ID: 37740) will remain closed until late 2026. During this time, please use the bus stop at Bacchus Marsh Village/Bennett Street (ID: 47225).

Right turn ban at South Maddingley Road

From late 2026 once the new traffic island on South Maddingley Road has been constructed, motorists exiting South Maddingley Road will only be permitted to turn left onto Parwan Road or use Mitchem Street to turn right onto Parwan Road.

This permanent change will improve safety and reduce congestion with the additional traffic lanes.

How this may impact you

Working hours

Most of these activities will take place at night from Sunday to Thursday between 8pm and 6am to minimise disruption to the community, road users and businesses.

Day works will occur between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays between 7am and 1pm.

These works are expected to generate some noise, dust and vibrations. We’ll monitor these impacts to ensure they’re kept to a minimum.

We'll work closely with impacted businesses and residents to provide additional information on works, timing and how we propose to manage the expected disruptions.

Access to businesses and driveways will be maintained at all times.

Two intersections in Bacchus Marsh will be upgraded at:

  • Station Street/Griffith Street, and
  • Grant Street/Parwan Road.

The intersection upgrades will improve road safety, enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide better crossing opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also improve access to the Bacchus Marsh Station precinct.

This upgrade will ensure that the intersections are prepared to handle increased traffic volumes for the next decade.

Station Street/Griffith Street Intersection and Grant Street/Parwan Road

The upgrade will:

  • replace the existing single lane roundabout with a dual lane roundabout
  • add pedestrian crossings at Griffith Street and Parwan Road
  • introduce a right turn ban for vehicles travelling from South Maddingley Road onto Parwan Road.

Refer to the map below to see what we’re doing:

Main Street and Grant Street/Gisborne Road Intersection

The upgrade will:

  • replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
  • remove the existing pedestrian crossing on Gisborne Road, north of the Grant Street/Gisborne Road and Main Street intersection.

Refer to the map below to see what we’re doing:

To deliver the intersection upgrade, we need to remove some car spaces on Grant and Main streets. Removing parking will create the space needed to improve the intersection and add new turning lanes.
