Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street, Mildura intersection upgrade

We’re upgrading the intersection of the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street in Mildura

Project status:

Underway

Overview

Transport Victoria is upgrading the intersection of the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street in Mildura. The intersection upgrade will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and increase safety for pedestrians at this busy Mildura intersection.

Works at the intersection include;

  • traffic signals and dedicated turning lanes
  • signalised pedestrian crossing points on all legs of the intersection (as part of traffic signals) and pedestrian refuges on the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue)
  • shared user paths for improved connectivity
  • upgraded lighting.

Part of the works will include closing access from the Deakin Avenue service road to Sixteenth Street. Vehicles will instead access the Sturt Highway from a new entry point to be constructed near Hoyts Avenue.

Traffic impacts

We expect to begin construction in October 2026 with works to continue through to mid-2027.

The construction timeframe reflects the considerable work required to relocate water assets, install stormwater drainage, construct new pavements and shared user path connections, install traffic signals, vegetation removal, linemarking, signage and upgrade bus stops.

To complete the intersection upgrade, works will be delivered in stages with every effort to minimise traffic impacts where possible.

The first stage of construction will include relocation of water mains and vegetation removal. There may be minor traffic disruption on site, such as lane closures and reduced speeds. Please follow the direction of traffic crews onsite and allow additional time.

The intersection upgrade has been designed to minimise vegetation removal where possible. However, to accommodate the safety improvements, some small trees and shrubs will need to be removed.

Road closures

To minimise disruption and deliver the works as safely and efficiently as possible, closures of sections of the intersection will be required. Detours will be in place during this time.

Sixteenth Street will be closed in two stages. Each stage will last approximately six weeks. Access for residents will be maintained during works.

The first closure will be between Deakin Avenue and San Mateo Avenue. Vehicles will detour via San Mateo Avenue and Fifteenth Street.

The second closure will be between Deakin Avenue and Walnut Avenue. Vehicles will detour via Walnut Avenue and Fifteenth Street.

We will provide updates to the community ahead of road closures. Please visit the Transport Victoria project webpage for updates as works progress.

Please plan ahead and allow extra time. We thank you for patience while these works are completed.
