Southern Cross Station Ventilation Improvements

We’re undertaking measures to improve air flow at Southern Cross Station.

Project status:

Planned

Southern Cross Station is undertaking works to the façade panels on sections of the station building and upgrading the ventilation systems in the bus interchange.

We’ll also be undertaking mechanical works near the myki gates.

When to expect us

Works will take place between 1 November and 16 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday (no works on Friday or Saturday nights).

What to expect

  • Works will take place in stages along the Collins Street side of Southern Cross Station, Spencer Street and Wurundjeri Way and the bus interchange
  • Intermittent medium construction noise from equipment and machinery
  • Temporary lighting, fencing and barriers around the work site
  • Temporary scaffold protection in some locations
  • Temporary overnight footpath closures on Collins Street at the work site with pedestrian detours in place
  • Increased contractor and maintenance vehicle activity near the work zones
  • Temporary fencing and safety barriers surrounding work areas
  • Access to platforms and movement through the station will be maintained throughout the works.

Background

Southern Cross Station is a busy station with diesel trains and buses that produce exhaust emissions as part of daily operations.

Australia will implement new workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants starting December 1, 2026, introducing stricter regulations and additional substances to enhance workplace safety.

It is important to note that the air quality at Southern Cross Station meets current Workplace Exposure Standards and the new Workplace Exposure Limits to be enacted from 1 December 2026.

Workplace Exposure Limits are mandated limits for the maximum allowable concentrations of airborne contaminants that workers can be exposed to in the workplace without risking their health.

Even though the station complies with workplace exposure limits, we are working with Civic Nexus to continue monitoring air quality and have designed measures to manage and improve air flow through the station.
