Route 82
We are getting Route 82 in Melbourne’s north west ready for the next generation of trams, the G Class as part of the Next Generation Trams enabling infrastructure works.
G Class trams will set a new standard for modern public transport by delivering a more comfortable, accessible and energy efficient journey for passengers.
The 25-metre-long G Class trams hold up to 150 passengers – almost twice as many as the oldest trams currently operating in Melbourne’s west.
They feature a more accessible low-floor design, more doors, handrails and improvements to passenger information to make it easier for everyone to use public transport.
About Route 82
Route 82 operates from Footscray to Moonee Ponds via Droop Street, Maribyrnong Road and Maribyrnong.
Route 82 passengers take over a million trips a year to jobs, education, shopping, services, leisure, and cultural activities in the Inner West.
G Class trams operating on Route 82 will provide better connectivity to key destinations such as Footscray Market, Highpoint Shopping Centre, Puckle Street shopping and Moonee Ponds Racecourse.
Footscray tram upgrades
We’re building four new level-access tram stop pairs on Droop Street in Footscray. These stops will make it easier and safer for people to get on and off Route 82 trams.
This includes upgraded stops on Droop Street at Tiernan Street and Geelong Road to provide accessible connections to the new Footscray Hospital.
These improvements will deliver level-access boarding for all passengers, when G Class trams roll out on Route 82.
Low-floor trams and level-access stops work together. They help passengers get on and off trams more easily and independently.
What’s happening?
In 2023 and 2024 we consulted with the community on how to make tram travel along Route 82 easier, safer and more accessible. This feedback, as well as tram network planning, environmental assessments and traffic studies have informed plans for level-access tram stops along the corridor.
The new tram stops will be larger and safer than existing stops, supporting more inclusive and equitable travel for passengers.
To align with these works and future proof the tram network, we’re relocating Stop 57 on Gordon Street approximately 140 metres north to Owen Street. Stop 57 will be a kerbside tram stop.
We’re also removing Stop 55 on Gordon Street at Lyric Street and Stop 63 at the Footscray Market to make tram services more efficient and reliable.
Kerb extension stops (stops built out from the footpath)
We’re extending the kerbs to build level-access stops along Droop Street at Nicholson Street, Geelong Road, Tiernan Street and Ballarat Road.

Example of a kerb extension, level-access tram stop (not to scale.)
We’ve also been planning a stop on Gordon Street at Kinnear Street. Service investigations have found complex and impactful utilities in the area.
We are working closely with our construction partners to ensure these important utilities are safely managed. We’ll keep the community updated when we have more details about next steps for Gordon Street.
What’s happening at each tram stop?
When?
Works on Droop Street will start in late 2026, with major construction occurring in early 2027.
We’ll get back in touch with community before the works start.
