McLeod Road and Station Street intersection upgrade

We’re making improvements to the McLeod Road and Station Street intersection in Carrum.

Project status:

Planned

Update - October 2026

We’re improving the McLeod Road and Station Street intersection in Carrum, making it safer and easier to move through the intersection and access the Nepean Highway.

This includes sequencing traffic signals and adjusting timing to provide more green time for the busiest movements and changing line-marking to create new through and turning lanes so more vehicles can move through the intersection. New directional signage will also help drivers navigate easier.

Planning is underway, with construction expected to begin in mid-2027.

What we’re doing

The upgrade will deliver a range of improvements at the McLeod Road and Station Street intersection. We will:

  • increase the amount of ‘green’ traffic light time on McLeod Road so more vehicles can get through the intersection
  • create a dedicated through lane for southbound traffic on the north leg of Station Street, so motorists don’t get stuck behind vehicles turning left into McLeod Road
  • improve directional signage so motorists can make more informed decisions about which lanes they need to be in
  • Move the eastbound bus stops on McLeod Street further east to help vehicles move through the intersection better.

Project background

In 2020, the level crossing at Station Street in Carrum was removed as part of the Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project.

As part of these works, the intersection of Station Street and McLeod Road was upgraded from a T-intersection to a multi-leg cross intersection and a new direct connection from McLeod Road to Nepean Highway was opened under the elevated train line.

The intersections, elevated train line, and neighbouring railway station form a complex environment that attracts a high volume of vehicles and pedestrians.

In February 2024, the Department of Transport of Planning surveyed the community to better understand how people use and experience these intersections, and where improvements could be made.

The feedback informed options to improve safety and traffic flow in and around the intersections.

These improvements are being delivered under Road Blitz, a joint Australian and Victorian Government initiative to improve efficiency and safety in Melbourne’s suburbs and surrounds.
