Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection improvements

Update - September 2026

Works are progressing well to improve the Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection in Heathmont.

In the coming weeks, crews will be replacing a damaged underground drainage pipe across Canterbury Road, and then completing road pavement works to provide a stronger and smoother road surface.

Please note that dates and times are subject to change, depending on weather conditions.

What to expect

Sunday 13 September (all day) and nightly (9pm to 5am) 14 - 17 September and 20 - 23 September 2026.

• From 12.01am Sunday 13 September to 5am Monday 14 September 2026, crews will work continuously to replace damaged drainage infrastructure across Canterbury Road.

• From 9pm Monday 14 September 2026, crews will work at night to complete profiling, asphalting and linemarking between Dickasons Road and Campbell Street. These works will occur at night to minimise disruptions to local traders and the road network.
   

Specific traffic management arrangements and disruptions will change from night to night. Access to several local roads from Canterbury Road, including Heathmont Road, Dickasons Road and Campbell Street, will be impacted, with detours in place. Please follow on-road signage and traffic controllers' instructions.

Shop local

While we work to upgrade the Canterbury Road and Heathmont Road intersection, businesses remain open and trading as usual. You can still access the Heathmont shopping strip by car, public transport or on foot.

• During the drainage works on Sunday 13 September 2026, several car park driveways at Heathmont Shopping Centre – east of Heathmont Road – will be temporarily closed. Access to the Heathmont Shopping Centre from Canterbury Road will be via one driveway (near the northern end of the car park) and from Allens Road. Exit will be via Allens Road only.

• From Monday 14 September 2026, daytime access will be reinstated at Heathmont Shopping Centre for the remainder of the works.

• Access to shops west of Heathmont Road (north side of Canterbury Road) will be closed at different stages in the evenings from 9pm to 5am between 14 – 17 September and 20 – 23 September 2026.

• Vehicle access to the Magic Hand Car Wash, Adrians Kebab Stop and Adrians Acai will continue to be maintained via Heathmont Road. The driveway on Canterbury Road will be temporarily closed until late September.

Pedestrian and bike rider access changes

From Friday 11 September 2026, we will temporarily close the footpath on the south side of the Canterbury Road bridge to install upgraded pedestrian safety fencing. A signed pedestrian detour will be in place using the reopened footpath on the north side of the bridge

What we’re doing

• Upgrading the traffic lights with fully controlled right hand turns from Canterbury Road into Heathmont Road.
• Extending the right turn lane on Canterbury Road by removing the U-turn lane. Drivers will be able to make a U-turn at the traffic lights.
• Installing new bike lanterns and providing a shared crossing for pedestrian and bike riders on Canterbury Road.
• Installing flashing ‘Give way to pedestrians’ signs to alert drivers turning right from Heathmont Road.
• Widening the footpath on the northern side of the rail bridge and installing upgraded pedestrian safety fencing on both sides of the rail bridge.   
• Minor realignment of the road.
• Improving access to public transport by providing smoother footpath surfaces, in line with disability access standards.
• Improving drainage and signage.
• Resurfacing Canterbury Road between Dickasons Road and Campbell Street.

Background

Approximately 36,000 vehicles travel on Canterbury Road every day. It is a freight route and key east-west connection from Camberwell to Montrose, with access to Eastlink.

In the 10 years leading up to 2020, there have been seven reported crashes at the Canterbury Road and Heathmont intersection.

This is a complex location where multiple transport modes - rail, road (including freight), and active transport interface. Careful planning is needed to improve safety and connectivity improvements while working within site constraints.
