Princes Highway and Eastern Beach Road intersection upgrade, Lakes Entrance

We’re upgrading the intersection of the Princes Highway and Eastern Beach Road in Lakes Entrance with new traffic lights, to improve safety, traffic flow and accessibility for all road users.

Project status:

Planned

Overview

We’re upgrading the intersection of the Princes Highway and Eastern Beach Road in Lakes Entrance, to improve safety, traffic flow and accessibility for all road users.

The upgrade will include:

  • new traffic lights and dedicated turning lanes
  • pedestrian-operated crossings on all four approaches
  • a new footpath on the north side of the Princes Highway, connecting to existing footpaths and pedestrian refuge near Middle Street
  • raised safety platforms
  • electronic advance warning signs (on the Orbost approach) and upgraded street lighting.

We expect work to begin in early 2027 and be completed later in the year.

The new traffic lights will provide controlled vehicle movements through this busy intersection and a safer crossing point for pedestrians, allowing us to remove the nearby school crossing on the Princes Highway as part of the works.

We will keep the community informed as we move toward construction.

Background

Lakes Entrance is a major tourist destination on the Gippsland Lakes. The Princes Highway runs through the town, providing a vital transport link between East Gippsland, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Eastern Beach Road, in eastern Lakes Entrance, is close to St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School, Eastern Beach, Lions Park Playground, Lakes Entrance Tennis Club, Lakes Entrance Aquadome, and several holiday and caravan parks.

The intersection carries high volumes of vehicles and pedestrians. The new traffic lights will provide safer, controlled turns for vehicles entering and leaving the highway, as well as safer crossing points for pedestrians.

The upgrade will improve traffic flow from Eastern Beach Road and nearby Golf Links Road onto the highway, particularly during peak times. It will also reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes.

The Australian and Victorian governments have committed $8.25 million for the Princes Highway and Eastern Beach Road intersection upgrade in Lakes Entrance, East Gippsland.
