Great Ocean Road - safety barriers

We’re installing road safety barriers on two sections of the Great Ocean Road between Port Campbell and Princetown to improve safety and reduce roadside hazards.

Update – September 2026

Works to install safety barriers on two sections of the Great Ocean Road between Princetown Road and Plantation Road (near the 12 Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge), are planned to start in early October 2026.

Works are expected to take up to three months to complete, weather pending.

These works are being completed to improve safety and reduce roadside hazards for visitors and road users. The project is a partnership between the Great Ocean Road and Parks Authority and Department of Transport and Planning.

What to expect

While works are underway, there will be some disruptions on the Great Ocean Road.  Traffic flow will be maintained at all times.

Crews will be on site Monday to Friday, with the possibility of weekend work. During work hours there will be:

  • a reduced speed of 40km/h
  • one lane, two-way traffic management in place through the work sites
  • traffic controllers and temporary traffic lights on site to guide vehicles, one lane at a time

The Great Ocean Road will reopen to two lanes after work hours.

Access to properties and tourist attractions will be maintained.
