Great Ocean Road landslip works, Fairhaven

We’re delivering landslip rectification and stabilisation works on an embankment of the Great Ocean Road at Fairhaven.

Project status:

Planned

Overview

We’re planning works to stabilise and rectify the landslip that occurred on Great Ocean Road at Fairhaven in 2025. This project will protect the longevity of the natural roadside landscape and improve safety for all road users.

The project will include:

  • vegetation and drainage works
  • removing unstable material
  • reconstructing the site
  • restabilising with new material
  • landscaping works

A construction program for this project is in development.

Project timeframes and disruptions will be published on this webpage when the construction program is finalised.

Disruptions and access

While the works are underway, there will be disruptions on the Great Ocean Road and nearby local roads. We'll make every effort to minimise disruption to traffic while works are completed. Please look out for signs and allow for extra time when travelling through the area.

The Great Ocean Road will remain open to one lane in each direction during the delivery of these works.

Traffic management will be in place to protect the safety of crews and road users, and may include:

  • reduced speed limits
  • two-way traffic flow. Single lane closures may be required at times
  • pedestrian detour
  • signs and traffic controllers to help movement through the works site

While access to residential properties and businesses will be retained, there will be periods of disruption to local roads and traffic flow.

The contractor will contact directly impacted residents and businesses should access be disrupted.

Background

In July 2025, a landslip occurred on the embankment of the Great Ocean Road, between Lialeeta Road and Painkalac Creek bridge, at Fairhaven.

For safety, traffic management has been in place on the Great Ocean Road at the landslip site.

Surf Coast Shire Council has worked with the Transport Victoria’s geotechnical engineers to review and finalise plans to remediate the slope.

Transport Victoria, as the authority responsible for the Great Ocean Road, will lead the delivery of landslip remediation and stabilisation works at this site.

Protecting our environment

We’re committed to delivering our works in a thoughtful and considered way to reduce impact on the environment.

We’re working closely with geotechnical designers, Surf Coast Shire Council and Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) to minimise environmental impact.

The delivery program of these works will be subject to environmental approvals.
