We’ve evaluated the Motorcycles in Bus Lanes Trial and made them permanent

Motorcycle riders continue to be over-represented in road trauma and lives lost, that’s why we remain focused on projects that can improve safety for all motorcyclists.

We’ve been running a trial since July 2019, allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes at select sites on the Eastern Freeway and Victoria Parade.

Crash trends, travel times, network usage and community sentiment have been assessed and evaluated.

The results of the evaluation indicate travel time improvements for motorcyclists and no safety impacts to motorcyclists and other road users.

Motorcyclists can now permanently use bus lanes along:

  • Victoria Parade, between Hoddle and Nicholson (westbound and eastbound), and
  • Eastern Freeway, west of Chandler Hwy and east of Hoddle Street (westbound).

Motorcyclists can continue to use the southbound bus lane on Hoddle Street which was made permanent in 2019.
