The West Gate Tunnel will open on Sunday changing the way people move between the city and Melbourne’s west.

Victoria’s newest road tunnels will provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge with new ramps, bridges, elevated roadways and a widened and upgraded West Gate Freeway.
The tunnels will give trucks a direct route to the Port, taking thousands of heavy vehicles a day off local streets.
The 4-kilometre outbound tunnel will be known as the Eureka Tunnel, a symbol of the Australian worker and the new gateway to Ballarat and western Victoria the West Gate Tunnel will create.
The 2.8-kilometre citybound tunnel will be called the Bundawanh Tunnel, meaning “he/she dug” in the language of the Bunurong people, the traditional owners of the land where the tunnel sits.
When the tunnel opens on Sunday, 24-7 no-truck zones will come into effect on Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville, Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray, Blackshaws Road in Altona North and Hudsons Road in Spotswood.
A night-time (8pm – 6am) and weekend no-truck zone will be in place on Williamstown Road in Seddon and Yarraville.
Roadside cameras will be monitoring trucks in no-truck zones to enforce the rules.
