The West Gate Tunnel is open

A new era of travel in the west is here

The West Gate Tunnel opened this morning,  delivering a new option for people and freight moving to and from the city’s west.

When the first vehicles travelled through the twin tunnels this morning, they marked the completion of a project that will offer quicker and more reliable journeys for thousands of Victorians.

The twin tunnels, called Eureka (outbound) and Bundawanh (inbound), provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, helping to reduce congestion for the 200,000 vehicles which use the West Gate Freeway each day.

In addition to the tunnels, the project has delivered extra and express lanes on the West Gate Freeway, the Wurundjeri Way extension, and more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, including the Dixon Veloway.

The tunnels give large trucks a direct route to the port, easing pressure on inner-west roads by taking 9000 trucks a day off local streets.

From today, 24-7 no-truck zones will come into effect on Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville, Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray, Blackshaws Road in Altona North and Hudsons Road in Spotswood. A night-time (8pm – 6am) and weekend no-truck zone will be in place on Williamstown Road in Seddon and Yarraville.

Drivers are reminded that it’ll take time for people to adjust to changes to the road network. Make sure to plan ahead as traffic conditions take time to settle.
